Hotels/Resorts

I am registered with Coyle and A Closer Look. I reviewed the boards and the master list of companies, but am still looking for good ones. Does anyone have some reliable recommendations?

I am looking for a hotel, might do the SQM half off deal since I'm going to see my daughter in Chicago, and need a room for one nite. They seem to have dried up.

If you just want to visit your daughter for one night, try hotels.com. Doing a mystery shop will take up most of your day and night in time.
I did a SQM half-off deal recently and it was the EASIEST hotel shop I have ever done. It was also at a pretty nice place (four star). I was shocked at the ease. Mine was a two night deal (so it paid for one night, I paid for the other) and also included meals and spa (meals and spa fully reimbursed) - and I think total reporting time was like an hour total. I totally found it worthwhile and would do it again if I was in the area (which I never would be, but still).

I do not know if all of their half-off deals are this easy or not...
OMG. I was staying away due to the 50% thing. After hearing this, Mickey, I am going to look into doing one next time I get off the rock. Even acknowledging that compared to me, you can do hotel evals while sleepwalking (since you specialize, and it would probably take me a tiny bit longer, what you have described would be worthwhile to me.

If you are going there anyway (or maybe planning a vacation) I would totally recommend it. I have worked much harder on a report for one nice meal. My mom (who was with me) kept commenting, "Don't you have to work on the report?" She is used to me spending most of my time at my laptop.

I would do it again in a heartbeat if I was going to be there (but most of these properties are in obscure places that I would rarely, if ever, be).
The SQM half off have simple reports, hardly anything, and their hotel is my favorite....so, hopefully, they'll have that available. I'll stay with her the second nite, she'll be with me the first, well worth the $$ for that hotel.

Not sure if this was covered elsewhere... do hotels consider it a "red flag" if they see that you are staying in a hotel that may be within a 20 mile radius of your residence? Being in south FL, I do see some hotel shops here and there - but am concerned that I may live too close by to make it seem like a legitimate hotel stay. Am I just being too paranoid?
I do this all the time. You can make a reservation using an address that's nowhere near the hotel. Of coarse, your ID will have the home address when you check in, but it's never been an issue for me.

I used to be ready with an excuse of "The house is being painted" or "I sold the house and am just back to finish up the paperwork", but have never been questioned.
Why would they? People have many reasons to not be at home. We stay 1 mile away in Waikiki several times a year. No one bats an eyelash.

My repertoire include that my son is having a party at the house, the pest control guys are coming and I am highly allergic, plumbing problems [unspecified] and the plumber is looking for parts, a night of respite for us with someone else caring for my father overnight, or just no reason given at all but a backup 'reason' available IF asked.
Love those reasons, will keep them in mind in case I need them. Such creativity! Thanks, guys!
I just say that I'm having some work done on my house and need to be out of the repair people's hair for a few days. I don't think they care, they are probably just making conversation.
I'm doing a Hotel in June in Pasadena, about 20 miles from my house...why should they care? Just say you need a get away.....

Live consciously....
And it would be rude of them to pry--it might be domestic issues or anything else that is none of their business. So they can care all they want but need to take you comment at face value and leave it alone.
The hotel I work for does not care if you live in town and check in for the night but the you can only use a credit card and not cash. The other larger hotels in town also have the same policy. The guest has to live farther than 50 miles to pay cash. Our desk clerks are instructed not to ask why they live in town and need a room they just have to make sure a credit card is used for payment.
Better to use a credit card, easier to get out of if something goes wrong. I'm not sure Hotels take cash anymore.

My guess is that the cash payers generally don't want the information on the credit card bill where the wife could see it and ask questions.
Our hotels here will take cash but they would prefer not to. If there is any damage to the room, smoking in the room, they slip in a pet and leave a mess we charge the cleaning fee ($150) to the credit card. If they pay cash and get out before we get cash in hand then we are left with the added mess and time to clean it up.

I am sure some cash payment are as Flash said. No bill no trail to follow.
What is a SQM? I have not seen any half off mystery shop hotels. The only ones I have been offered seem to have quite a bit of work.
Flash...good call, you know how those married men are, no paper trails, too bad Tiger's wife didn't catch on.

SQM is Sensors Quality Management, Inc. A link to their site is on this forum's list of mystery shopping companies.
Mert...SQM is a Hospitality Company out of Canada that has great Hotels. You have to take a level 9 test, but can do 1/2 off without the test. Just register.

Thanks Irene: I registered but did not hear anything further. What is a level 9 test?
Level 9 test allows you to do their upscale Hotels, but, is very difficult. I'm still at level 5 and can't bear to go back and finish, that's why I do the 1/2 off rooms.
