That awkward moment... (Maritz edition)

That awkward moment when a Maritz scheduler calls you to counter an incentive request with an amount that is less than what they're currently offering online.

Are you serious? How did you handle that?

It's happened to me several times. I've come to realize that they don't know or can't see what is offered online.
They definitely don't know what's online, and it happens so frequently that it's no longer awkward. I just tell them that it's more online and they tell me to book it online then... to which I reply, "No. I'll wait until you accept my request for more."

My most awkward moments are when I answer the phone for them, they ask me to do a shop and I ask what they are paying for it. Of course I know what it's listed for on the board. If I wanted it for that amount i would have self assigned already. They tell me the base fee. Um, no. Don't call unless you are either offering an incentive or asking me how much I need to do it.
I've asked them to not call me unless they are offering incentives, since I would often get three calls a week from the same person just to tell me they have shops available in my area. I used to get 15 calls for the same shop, with no bonus. It's much better now.
This surprises you why?

On the projects I am active in, they have learned when its prudent to call me. I have a decent relationship with a few of the schedulers there, and they know better than to call me without an incentive. I have also learned that it means nothing if I say my offer is "firm". They will always counter, and I will always say that I said I was "firm" and I wouldn't go lower. I still get the shop 90% of the time. I guess, perhaps, that their corporate policy is to always counter offer no matter what. Either that or they are daft.

All that said, I make some real good money with great bonuses from this company on occasion. They also have some really genuine and sold people working for them. I can put up with the dog and pony show to get there. At least, for me anyway, there is a lot less dog and pony show than there used to be.
