Taking a Break from Service Check Job, Editor Issues

I usually do a certain Service Check shop once a month or so and donate the products purchased to a local rescue. A few months ago I had multiple problems with an editor requesting vague changes to a narrative and addition of other information that did not follow the guidelines or written sample. I told myself I'd give them one more chance and stop doing the jobs if I have any more problems.

This month I unexpectedly did three locations, the first two with no problems early in the month. The third, completed last week, just came back scored as an 8. The editor admonishing me for the narrative needing to be more elaborate, not summarized... except that is the format and example they give to follow and I receive 10's on regularly. Honestly, I can't tell if the editor doesn't like me or has an issue with the writing requirement/sample for the job. The nice part about being an IC is I don't have to figure it out, I can move on. Maybe come back to the jobs in a few months and see if the MSC gets things settled.

I had the same problems with an Editor...if you don't put everything in exact order or you double space, your grade drops and you have to re-do. The time involved working with that Editor doesn't equal the pay. I like one shop they have, but, just don't see their way of Editing valuable. I got a seven and put in a lot of time, however, everytime you have to change something, your grade drops a point....

Same here. They are the only MSC I deactivated my account with because I wanted to be sure I didn't accidentally accept another job with them.
This time she didn't request any correction just the bad score and remark. From my last interaction, I'm wondering if the person is not a regular editor but someone higher up that edits occasionally when they are trying to get a job wrapped up. Most of my reports go smoothly with the rare job sent back because I forgot to cover one of the yes answers from the survey in my narrative (I end up with a score of 9 on those, which I deserve for my oversite).
Do they still pay you? If so ignore the scores and remarks and just keep on keeping on.

I think on a whole, they have very picky Editors, haven't gotten an easy one yet, and why have to explain yes answers, only reports I have seen this on for this type of shop, so much narritive,

It's not you. I have done these for a long time, and am just recently getting emails about "issues" and narrative quality. She seems to have a particular burr somewhere. If she wants Coyle-level description, then the job itself needs to have higher value.

The pay is fairly low and not worth the work. This job is more about the reimbursement. But really, they cut that in half and it now covers the required items + a bit which I can get at half the price or less down the street (and no editor to deal with).
I can understand that. I quit doing Chipotle for similar reasons. I had thought about dropping them for quite some time because I loved doing the shop but I HATED doing their reports and didn't feel like it was worth it. Then I got a bit of nasty feedback from a rude editor and decided I was done. Haven't looked back either!

Noooo. The shop I did for them has an initial "purchase" that's pricey. I never look to see my scores, and when I accepted a shop via email from the scheduler and went to the website to confirm, that's when I saw that i got a 5 on my last report. The editor kept sending the report back to me even though she was contradicting the instructions on the report itself. No way was I taking a chance of getting another low score and possibly not getting reimbursed for a hefty outlay of cash. I emailed the scheduler right away that I wouldn't do the shop. And then deactivated myself.
Is this a new editor or something? The only shop they had here is gone now. Over the course of a few years I didn't receive many scores less than 10. Once the sample narrative had been removed so without the template I didn't hit the points they way they preferred. To their credit, after questioning the scheduler she was genuinely surprised it was gone and made sure it was there going forward. Another time the editor and I did not quite agree about the upsell. I lost that battle. Every time I did the shop going forward, it was only when bonused. IMO, I won the warsmiling smiley

At first, I thought it was a new editor because their follow-up questions and rewrite demands were like they didn't know the shop's narrative format well. But after a few phone interactions, I think it might be someone higher up that only edits occasionally (or maybe an editor that only does this job occasionally). Just me speculating.
Is it Christina?

The company only had one client in my area, who no longer shows up on the boards. (They started as an independent store, became part of a corporate chain, then bought themselves out and went independent again). I did the shop many times, often with nice bonuses. Only had a problem once, and it was completely my fault.

Gosh, that seems really stupid on the editor's part. Sending a report back because it wasn't in the order they wanted and you double spaced, and they want YOU to fix it? It's called job security, editor. It's your job to fix it. As long as all of the necessary information is there they should not return the shop to you to re-do. For crying out loud, how hard is it to take out one of the spaces?!!!!

I do a supermarket for them on a regular basis. They changed the requirements some time ago and it took me a while to streamline my narrative to what they wanted. I suggested they provide a sample narrative but it never happened. I now use a template that I change for the actual situation. This way I am able to provide exactly what is required and no more or no less. I was actually told that I was provided too much info as I adjusted to the new requirements. I still have to watch for those double spaces though. They seem to appear when I copy and paste from Word.
I have found Karin and her team nothing but professionals. Whenever I have needed/wanted their input and advise on either shopping or writing they have been quite forthcoming in a very professional, respectful way.

They key to working with a demanding MSC is communications; it can be mutually beneficial.

While Service Check demands more that other MSCs, there is a certain sense of accomplishment in developing a report that contains qualitative data. Who wants to spend their time doing MarketForce type multiple choice surveys?
I have been with Service Check since 2004. I have done over 300 shops and my rating is 10/10. The reports are fair. They had a dining client in the SoCal area that no longer appears on the board that aid very well once Bonuses were factored in - and they almost always were. Karin and Kate are good people
I did shops for them some time ago, but no longer receive emails or job offers since I removed myself from their email list. Same issue with the editor. I think of going back but... nah. Not worth the frustration.
I did a bunch of work for them 2 years ago when I first started out. After a couple months, I found better paying shops with less of a report nuisance. Their grocery shops around here are not worth it, even at double the base fee. The pet store shop has a great reimbursement limit, but then you have to deal with their editors. I really like their clients, just wish they were with another MSC.

Taking a heavily bonused MF shop for $50 or more that is 15 miles from my home and will take me 20 minutes to report over a $15 Service Check shop that is 25 miles from home and will take an hour to submit? That's a no brainer.

Different experiences. I have never landed a heavily bonused MF shop, however, I frequently get heavy bonuses on Service Check shops just down the road from me.
The most recently bonused shop from MF was a $20 bonus for a hedgehog shop a few months ago. Location was only about 9 miles from my house....easy, easy report!

I got a $60 bonus for an $8 wifi shop. Once. Just once. Smaller bonuses are offered every month.
I once got $125 from MF for a shop where all I had to do was purchase a money order from one of those check cashing places. It was awesome.
Thank you so much for posting this. I don't feel so alone, and I have no one I can talk to about this. I pointed out that some things the editor was asking for were not specified in the notes, and therefore were not completed. The editor acted as if I my concerns were fatuous and that I was a vacuous person for not understanding how the form should be completed. When I asked for guidance as not to repeat any errors in the future, e.g. trying to see things from their point of view, the editor reiterated the instructions exactly, with no elaboration or explanation. I had top scores for many years prior to the last six months. I was ashamed and embarrassed and would have stopped working for them altogether, except I need the work. I'm transitioning to a few other companies that have treated me with respect, and are more than willing to cheerfully answer questions before, or after, the shop. They know some shoppers really want to succeed and do the best job possible for the client.
