Mintel Bar Shop

I got this email today:
“Hope you are well, My name is xxxxx from the field services team and we have a new project taking place in these cities -
Boston, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Franciso.

For this project, you would need to visit at least 40 Bars and order certain drinks for testing and complete surveys for each bar.”

Visit at least 40 bars? No thanks.

I'm in one of those cities but didn't get the email. I'd do it if the pay and expenses were right. May I ask who the scheduler is?

I sent you a PM.
Try signing in to the MSC in the thread title. You should have a "message" waiting for you that explains this. I don't live in one of those cities and I still got the "message".

No message for me explaining the details. Just a repeat of the email.
Correct. The "message" is the email. I guess I wasn't clear in my earlier post. Thanks.

Don't worry. I can handle this one.
It is not like one of those chain bar surveys before the pandemic, is it? I can't remember who was sending those out then. But probably not a single brand chain, because what brand with a bar would have that many locations in any metro area?
In my experience Mintel is one of the best MSCs to work for. They pay good for all projects and in my opinion more than fair. They are easy to work with. They have great communication. They pay on time and like clockwork. Although I have only done 20 or so projects for them over they years this has been my experience with each and every one. If I lived in one of those cities I would certainly contact them.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.

SoCalMama - is that with or without the help of Uber?
Uber, a personal driver, a hotel, etc. I don't drink and drive.

I like Mintel a lot too, but this project won't work for me. Not nearly enough $.
So have they already assigned people? I reached out, but didn't hear anything. I'm honestly not sure how Mintel works, since there is no job board? They just let certain people know about projects?

Yes, he sent me a personal email and after getting the details, I declined.
In 2019? Pre-pandemic? I did a series of shops where it was a brand of beer shopped ... and I went to local bars in my city to see how it was poured and served and took the beer's temp (which sounds funny to write. The beer wasn't sick.)

It might be the same scenario.
I need $1/minute. That's $60 an hour. With 40 locations, I'd need about $1200 to do this project.
I don't work for less, and I get that much all.day.long.
Don't sell yourself short. It perpetuates poverty.

So is it really a minimum of 40 bars? How long do they give you to do that?

Yes, 40. You aren't in the right area though. There aren't 40 close enough to you. I don't know how long they were giving, but I figured 30 minutes each average (some might be 10 minutes, but I averaged 30 minutes to include travel time).

0.5 hr x $60/hr = $1200 is what I need at an absolute minimum to do this project.
Gas is over $4.25 here, so I'm not really "feeling this" anyway.
Basically, I could do this in 3 days. That's $400 a day (minus gas). It would be a grind.
If I did it in 4 days, it would be more manageable. That's now $300 a day.
They were offering $10/shop, plus $5 for travel, and reimbursement for the beverage. It wasn't a brand or beverage that I drink, so there was no incentive to do it. Generally, I think of Mintel as offering really fair pay, but this one was a real no-go.
