Trendsource

Is this the right website for them:

They said they would only contact me if they have a need for a fieldworker in my area.

The email I got said that they would contact me on an as needed basis.

I know people have said they perform background checks at Trendsource. Filling out the application, they did not mention this.

That's how I got started as well. Couldn't see the job board and I was only officially "accepted" and given an ID after I accepted my first job, which was offered via email. Perhaps this is not always the case, depending upon the area, but I think that's generally how they do it. Background checks are only required if you want to do Business Verification shops.
I was deactivated when I told them that on one of there jobs "A sucker is born every minute."
Background checks are for doing Business Valuations. I did them last year and didn't need one. Now I'm supposed to pay for one and MAYBE get assignments.

Some of the business evaluations I've seen come up have been in some bad areas with high crime rates. As a female shopper traveling alone, that concerns me more than background checks.

That's a well-taken point. A shopper's seven dollar background check is reportedly an attempt, albeit feeble, to reassure the business. Would I feel reassured if the contact person in a dicey area produced a seven dollar background check for me? No, I still wouldn't go. This business involves a huge amount of research, mutual trust and gut instinct.
Trendsource makes you get assigned by them for at least five shops before you are able to self assign. But once you can and have the ability to grab the shops as soon as they become available, they are a worthy and probably one of the BEST to work for. Bank account automatically gets the money deposited and it is nice to see an extra deposit or two show up when you forgot it was coming.
I often do sx or more Trendsource shops a month as well as work a full time job.
