Merchandising Question

Hi Everyone,

I had a question and I know there may be some variations with the answers as it could all depend on what is in your independent contractor agreement with the company BUT I was wondering if this is plausible and has anyone ever done this - accept a merchandising assignment and then contract it out to someone else OR say if you accept an assignment are there ever circumstances where you can bring someone along to help you (e.g. like your husband/boyfriend or friend) so you can get the job done quicker.

When you become an Independent Contractor to do merchandising work, the company requires YOU to do the work and hold yourself accountable that all aspects of the job were done to the satisfaction of the company. Quite often there will be a checkbox on the work order or invoice submitted for payment that the work was performed by you and that all answers on the invoice were performed correctly. For that reason alone I would not ever subcontract the work to someone else. Besides the accountability aspect, the pay for such work is not high enough to farm it out to others.
Thanks what about having someone help you. If I get my boyfriend to help in some instances I could lessen the amount of time and I know I wouldn't have to break him off a big portion of my earnings since he is my boyfriend but I know this may depend on my agreement and for the most part I would be capable of doing my own assignments but it would be nice in certain instances to be able to work in a team. Anyone ever done that?
Then have your boyfriend install the app and do work as himself. That's the only honest way to go about it.

Thanks just thought I have heard husband-wife teams on this forum or maybe another...didn't know if this was a common or allowed thing so figured I would just ask - thanks for the responses everyone.
yes some work as teams but then both are employed. My husband and I sometimes work together but that is when we are both employed by that company.
You also have to protect yourself, what if the person not on the clock gets injured? Workman's comp won't cover injuries to someone doing work when they weren't paid to do it.
Best way to handle that is to do the work yourself unless he works for the company as well.

Rememeber companies sometimes call the store and verify you were there.

Husband and Wife teams are good..but usually because they work for the company together.

No company will accept kids under a certain age to accompany you...use your best judgement..

The merchandising company is responsible for you in the client store. You must sign in, connect with a manager, visit back rooms, and be in non public areas of stores. Bringing someone with you is a big no no and you could be escorted out by security and have the merchandising company lose its contract.

Merchandising works best when you have trust with the store management and employees. You are there to work as an employee of the merchandising company and are a guest in the store. If you must bring someone - have them shop while you work. The stores see all the reports you submit and are graded by their adherence to corporate standards as well as the product manufacturer who paid to get their product front and center to their specifications.

I know someone who used to work demonstrations that were contracted out to her by the origional demonstrator. One of my companies told me to take someone along when I found out that the job involved climbing a ladder after I accepted the job and I told them that I do not do ladders.

If you need to climb a ladder and are unable, you shoud request a store employee to get the product down. If anything should happen neither the store or merchandising company would be liable. And if while on the ladder, someone else would get hurt from say a falling product, the person on the ladder could be liable. If I was doing an assignment and my product was not available and must be brought down I would contact the store manager as to how to proceed. I would not bring it down myself.
