Feedback for New Forum Design Part II

Now that I've launched the new forum design, I think it's time to create a new feedback thread.

I want ALL of your complaints, criticisms, suggestions, etc.

I can't promise I'll make changes based on the feedback I get, but I will take everything into consideration. This forum is for you, the members, so your feedback is very important to me.

Thank you!

I received a fatal error when looking at my companies....(just practicing here) Thanks. .sent Jacob a PM... my last message did not go anywhere (I think!)

To be honest I did too. But changes are a' comin' tongue sticking out smiley
I liked it the way it was but it seems it was a problem for those who use smart phones and tablets. From reading the last thread it appears it is far better now for those and not an improvement for desktop/laptop users...as a desktop user I know I will get used to the new format. I would like more color, yes...it is very sterile looking.
Hi Jacob,

Ny companies have a fatal error. Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'PDOException' with message 'SQLSTATE[08004] [1040] Too many connections' in /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/models/baseModel.php:6 Stack trace: #0 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/models/baseModel.php(6): PDO->__construct('mysql:host=loca...', 'mysteryf_forum', 'pinano') #1 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/models/companyModel.php(11): baseModel->__construct() #2 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/controllers/myCompaniesController.php(16): CompanyModel->__construct() #3 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/router.php(47): myCompaniesController->index(NULL) #4 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/router.php(39): jjRouter->go('myCompanies', 'index', NULL) #5 /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/index.php(7): jjRouter->route_from_query_string() #6 {main} thrown in /home/mysteryf/public_html/mycompanies/models/baseModel.php on line 6

I prefer the old format. It is a little hard to see with orange backgrounds and orange lines.
@FluffyCat --

thank you for reporting the error! Please let me know if it appears again.

The orange is currently only in a few places, and never with important text. There shouldn't be any orange lines anywhere. Where are you seeing those? I do think the text with an orange background could be a little more readable. I'm going to consider changing it a bit.

Jacob
I like the site, it looks easy to navigate, I will be anxious to see it unfold.
Hi Jacob,

I'll need some time to get more used to it, especially on my cell phone.

One observation - the links to the "Official List. . . " and the MSM are not as prominent or as visible as they perhaps should be. Perhaps reversing the fields would do it - a blue background with white lettering, similar to the top bar on the new site or the logo the MSM had on the old site.

Thanks.

How to start a new topic. Is there a button on new forum? I see it here under Meta . But whereabouts on other headings to start new topic? I followed an old closed thread...but want to talk again about how to search shops on archaic Prophet & disorganized Shopmetrics.
The ads that appear right after the OP's post are distracting. The spacing between posts are too generous that it breaks the continuity of the thread. And as I stated before, there is too much space between posts that it breaks my concentration. I am sorry but I prefer the old style. Not that I want you to go back to the old but I am not a fan of the new format, if you are asking my opinion.
@risinghorizon -- thank you for the feedback! I'm sorry that you're not a fan of the new format. Hopefully I'll be able to make you one.

Based on your feedback, I reduced the spacing between posts. They are now closer together. Hopefully not too close to crowd eachother, but close enough to make it more readable and less distracting.
@Eric in Tampa -- you may notice that I've added more color in a few places. I plan to add more when I find ways to do it that make sense. Suggestions are welcome!

Warmly,

Jacob
This Part II looks more crispier than the first one. The first one looked like it was hazy, like a gloss film was over it.

One of the better sites I've seen to navigate. Very clean and sharp pages. Wasn't a fan of the old site so I look forward to the change. Thank you.
Jacob, I am really starting to like it and thank you for making improvements on the new design. The design is unique and functional and afford less distraction. Navigating is easier. I am getting so used to the changes, I am afraid to get addicted to the Forum. Well done!
One more thing, could the 'Reply' and 'Preview,' at the bottom of 'Your Reply,' be darker as they are too embedded (in white) and unreadable. Thanks.
Well done! I haven't found anything distracting, looks good on my phone and my laptop, everything seems to be working for me. My favorite improvement is the menu bar at top. I never complained, but I hated that I used to have to go to the home page to log out. Now I log out from anywhere. Thank you for all your hard work.
It's okay. Honestly, I'm not feeling like it's any better or worse, just different. The forum list page does seem to run together. With the old format there seemed to be more delineation between forum topics, top discussions, etc.

Something I would love to see is the option to navigate to a different page at both the top and bottom. I was catching up on some topics and had skipped a page. When someone responded to a previous post I found myself scrolling to the top of the page looking for the original. Since it was not on the same page it meant having to scroll back to the bottom to get to the previous page.

@LisaSTL -- I just added Page Navigation to the top, as requested.

@risinghorizon -- the Reply button is now darker.
You are one fast hombresmiling smiley Thanks!

What about a 'mark read' button for individual posts? Sometimes I get busy and don't have time to read the forum for a few days. I come back and there are hundreds of new messages queued up, some of them with topics I have no interest in (i.e., stores not in my area). However, if I mark an entire discussion read I'd miss valuable information.

@JJ------------->Does there have to be a RECENT DSCUSSIONs post at the end of each page or each scree.. It takes away from when the current post ends and how to find the next pageconfused smiley The Recent Discussion additions makes the page seem too busy.

Also I tried to delete my first post above @0544 and it would not delete. AND when I go to PREVIEW, it does not show my original post if I wanted to change something before it is submitted. AND sometimes an AD or AD VIDEO will show up in between post.

You don't appear the same on my tablet as you do on the laptop. There are nine ADS at the bottom of this page. I will help you may money but that is .........................grinning smiley
@sojo917 --

thank you very much for the feedback! I think that it is quite valuable. You may be on to something with the Recent Discussions distracting from the rest of the discussion page. I'm not likely to remove them -- but I do think that I might make them more visibly separate, with maybe a different background color on that part of the page.

I also just updated the "preview" page. Maybe it is more clear now? Let me know!

In terms of the ads: The way it is set up now, Google gets 3 "blocks" that they can basically fill with whatever they want. It changes depending on the size of the screen. Sometimes they put several ads in one "block", sometimes they put just one. I do not want the ads to take away from the forum, but they do pay the bills, and also allow me to spend time responding to feedback, improving the site, etc.

Thank you again! Please keep the feedback coming.

Edit: I wanted to add that there currently is not a way to "delete" your own posts. Only moderators are able to do that. Is there a "delete" button visible to you?

No I do not see a delete button So maybe you can delete my 0544 post smiling smiley. I did not notice the two post until I I tried to edit the (0544) and it showed up twice.

Every time I come to the forum it is getting better. I think I am "adapting". grinning smileysmiling smiley
