Kind of defeats the purpose if a post that should be deleted is somehow saved in a member's history for others to dig up. Particularly for one of the most common reasons for reporting a post - ICA violations.
I've seen some amusing posts that were deleted for inappropriate content before...I would have liked to have seen what else other posters had to say about them before they ended up getting deleted, but they were pretty bad.
