Need to cancel asignmwnt but been posted camera

Hi,

I have been offered my very first asignment but unfortunately I have to cancel it due to personal reasons and I will not be able to work for them in the future, but the Mystery Shopping company has already posted out a video camera. It cost them £7.55 to post, and they provided me with a prepaid envelope for me to return the camera after the asignment.

As I am cancelling the assignment will I have to pay the postage? (£15.10).

If I was that company, I would make you pay for it. You canceled the assignment. No fault of theirs.
Your other option would be to keep the video camera and reimburse the MSC for a new video camera smiling smiley Your actions, or lack thereof have cost someone time and money.....accept responsibility.
You'll likely have to pay to return the camera.

Why would they pay to ship the camera to you and for shipping back? You will likely have to pay the shipping or be held responsible for the entire cost of the equipment

AFAIK, MSCs always pay shipping both ways for loaner cameras. They also pay $10 to $50 less when loaning a camera and the difference is partly to offset the shipping costs.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

True, Lisa, but in this instance, the OP has had to cancel the shop for personal reasons. As the MSC is getting nothing out of it, it's reasonable to expect the OP to have to pay return shipping.

There are really three separate questions:

1. Will you have to pay the postage?
2. Should you pay the postage?
3. If yes to either #1 or #2, how much should you pay or will have to pay?

IMO:

1. You don't have to since the company provided you with a prepaid envelope.
2. You should, since you canceled and it was not the company's fault.
3. You should offer to pay at least the returning postage and you should ship the equipment back ASAP, with an apology. You may be legally responsible to pay more.

I agree James and was addressing the previous post. It read as if there was some confusion regarding a loaner versus a purchased camera. The bigger question is why the shop was canceled versus rescheduling which would have made the shipping question moot.

Depending on the circumstances, I would consider paying the return postage whether or not the MSC demanded that I do so. Just as I would expect the MSC to make things right if they made a decision that cost me money (e.g., canceling a shop at the last minute after I had already left to complete the shop), I would plan to reimburse the MSC for something I did that cost them money.

Obviously I don't know your specific situation, but if I were in your position, I would be asking myself what the right thing to do would be in that particular circumstance.

Either way, I hope things work out for you. Good luck, and welcome to the forum!
