Question about Trendsource grocery store shop

I saw an assignment for a grocery store shop offered by Trendsource in which you purchase at least 3 items, one of which has to be placed under the cart. The limited guidelines did not state what to do if you are not asked about the item. Do I have to walk out with the item without paying for it, or do I have to bring it to the cashier's attention before I pay? I'm leery of this assignment because I don't want to look like a shoplifter.

Anyone done these TS grocery store shops?

I have a couple of these assigned. It will be my first time. I'm worried that the cashier will think I'm trying to get away with not paying for the item, when I don't remove the item from my cart.

cutiebear, as I was a cashier and manager for Safeway, Inc several years ago. It is absolutely normal for customers to forget things on the bottom of the basket. It's so common, in fact, that grocery stores lose millions per year BOB inventory loss. Safeway trained cashiers extensively that it was their responsability to check under each customers cart. Enjoy your shop!

How funny would it be to have an entire case of of toilet paper in the bottom of the cart, and one single bottle of Kaopectate (or other brand of anit-diarrheal) in the upper part?

I have done lots of these shops and was surprised to see so many of the items under the cart not seen. I would say for every 10 that I have done 8 were not discovered until I pointed it out.

They have always caught my items, either the bagger or cashier...really not a big deal, but do not walk out of store with item.

I worked years ago in a store where there was a mirror so we could see the bottom of the basket. The next time I'm buying groceries, I'm going to look for one. Do they still use them?

Well, you could add a few things to the upper part.

Like black beans, refried beans, broccoli, milk, seven bean soup, and soda.

What are the chances of being made as the mystery shopper now?

The store I shopped had signs taped to the belt at the entrance of the lane that said, "Check for items on the bottom of your cart." Apparently, the store considered the customer responsible for that. Mine were NEVER checked. I would just play the spacey card and say, "Oh, did you get this?"

I was at the store with my Dad a looooong time ago when I was a teenager... he did essentially this, but instead of Kaopectate, he had bottles of prune juice in the top. Sheesh.

There are definitely still mirrors. A good cashier will always walk around the check stand and bag the first bag for the customer to make sure they don't miss! Sometimes the cashier is tall enough to peek over the check stand. I really enjoy having been on both sides of the grocery checkout.

SandiAigo- I bet that store loses a lot of money to BOB.

Back in the, well, a long time ago, I was a cashier. I had a mystery shopper say I did not catch the item in BoB, BUT i did.
Hated that. My one and only (to my knowledge) and I was pissed. I got in trouble for catching it? Sure, it was at the end, I totaled the order, but *I* caught it.
When trapping cashiers, be sure to let THEM catch it. The lady had the item "hidden", and I said, "Oh, you have ____ under your cart". I ended up getting yelled at because SHE apparently liked catching minimum wage cashiers screw up.

The shop I did for years and years required the cashier, the bagger, or even another customer catch the item PRIOR to the total being given. I would never try to hide the item and it was easier for me if they did catch it...it would be a yes answer rather than a no with an explanation. Less work for me.

Considering the area that the store was in, that wasn't the only place they lost money!
The location was the discounted child of the parent company, so maybe they can't afford
mirrors like the "upscale" brand? Anyway, I just think it's funny that they leave the checking up to the customer, like a sign is going to stop someone!

I just did my first shop, a couple of days ago. They didn't catch the item. I pushed the cart out of the lane next to the bagger and she put the bags in the basket and still didn't catch it. I really wanted her to see it. When I brought it up after I was given my total, the bagger and checker looked at each other like "oh s---"

I set my items on the counter. Then, I begin rummaging through my purse as though I am looking for something... like cash (for the smart MSC)... or my debit card (for this MSC). Since I only pick up 5-6 items, the cashier is quick to ring up the items and provide a total price...

Then, I look at the register or the card reader, whichever is providing the itemized listing, and I say, "That can't be right. It should be more money" Then, I look at my cart and say, "Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot this."

Love these shops, BTW.... signed for 26, but I didn't get back online quick enough when the email went out throwing the shops to the fastest dog running. I only got six shops this round, and none of them were close to home.
