Shipping zones

There are many, many post offices in my area in 4 different states that are all in Zone 1 for me. Some use the same sorting location, some do not. I have never had a problem with Priority Mail showing up as an option. In fact, it has to show up if the item being mailed weighs more than 12 ounces. Make sure that you input a weight of 1 lb 2 ounces to be sure that you trigger priority mail. I mail from PA to DE, 12 miles away. It takes 2 days by Priority Mail because two different sorting center are involved. One day to get to the PA sorting center. Overnight to the DE sorting center, the next day to get from the DE sorting center to the local office, and then delivery on Day 2. Same if I mail 90 miles away to NJ, or 1000 miles away in Zone 4. Two calendar days.

I have my first USPS shop on Friday; what do you typically send to make sure it's over 18 oz? A book? A hand tool? I'm sending to my parents, so whatever it is, no big deal.
Are you doing an "A" or a "B" shop? If it is "B", then it generally needs to be flat so as to fit into the Ready Post envelope. You can send them a pile of blank paper. Weigh it in advance. The envelope will add a little weight, depending upon which one you pick. Put the paper inside an envelope or even a plastic supermarket bag so it isn't obvious what it is if you are observed. Never say it is a book, since it triggers a special mailing rate. Same with magazine. Tell them that they are old photographs if asked, but rarely would you be asked anything other than is it a book or magazines or bound printed matter. Just say no. You can ship a book, or anything else.

If it is an "A" shop, then you have put it into a box in advance, and the box weighs a few ounces. Ship your parents a pound of rice or pasta or something else convenient. Or old magazines. Or something you really want to ship them, but keep it under two pounds.

Your parents of course need to be in a different town with a different zip code. The postage reimbursement will cover up thru Zone 4 if it is less than 2 pounds (and over 18 ounces). Be sure to weigh it in advance.

I use the free magazine put out by the university where I work. Free and available in abundance. Four of them makes 20 oz. They fit in the ReadyPost envelopes, or I rip them in half to fit in small boxes for the A shops.

They also have Ready Post boxes. I did one with $1.99 box and sent baby food, baby snacks and a packet of cake mix to add weight.
I used a B shop to send a t shirt to a friend's son. I made the weight requirement by adding four movie theater sized candy boxes. They fit perfectly in the Ready Post envelope, and he loved the surprise treat.

Edited for typo. Oops.

I believe it's "A" and I'm shipping a grand total of 20.2 miles (thanks to Google). USPS still shows as being Zone 1, so I assume I'm good to go. Thanks for the ideas!
For an A shop I use a can of corn. For a B shop I often use a cake mix or magazines I have read.
Be sure to let your friend/family member know what you are doing or else they will most likely decide to commit you to the funny farm after they get a can or corn from you that you seemingly spent about $10 postage to send to them. I let my friend know in advance that I was "testing" out something from the post office and did not have to actually pay the postage and she still called me and said she was very happy to get my post but sad I had spent so much money to send it to her.
I know this is kind of off topic, but does anyone know why we have to wait at least 35 minutes between USPS shops?

The harder I work, the luckier I get.
I have done 2 or 3 of these shops back when they were changing the rule that they had to be paid with cash. I think they rejected one of mine because I used a credit card. I have not done another one since. If they would let me use my cc, I would do a lot of these with grandchildren in So. Cal and me in Vegas.

What does a shipping buddy do? Just accept the package? I might be available to receive those empty boxes...send me a PM.

Hugs
I didn't pay cash... and I got a 10/10. I only had to ship Priority, and it was sitting on my parents front door the next day.
