Pay it forward

I was doing a fast-food shop today. When I got to the window the Associate cheerfully announced that the person in the car ahead of me had paid for my order! Half of me is grateful and the other half is thinking, "How the hell am I going to work this out?"

Then the gal says that the payor was the 4th in a chain of pay-it-forwards, and then paused and looked at me. So I can be a do-gooder AND get a receipt to prove I was there. So I said OK. Luckily, my bill was less than a dollar more than what my order cost.

When I got my order, the receipt was taped to the bag! So, I do have the right receipt, but I didn't pay for my meal - I paid for the guy behind me. Think the MSC will reimburse me for my meal?

NOTE: I'm not on the forum every day. If someone comments on my post, I might not reply right away. I've been a shopper since 1991. I've never done any work for a MS company in any other capacity.

That is a tough call. If you report the fact that the location is going along with this pay it forward game, you risk having the shop rejected for many reasons.

1. You didn't pay for your own food.
2. The timing data is invalid as it takes longer to explain this pay it forward game.
3. The location can deny that they did the pay it forward game.
4. This MSC hates to submit reports that are non-compliant. Especially if there are violations of policy and management is aware of it.

I would have stated, "I will pay it forward for the exact cost of my meal." and then since you then paid them for the food you received, you would not be lying when you filled in the blanks of amount paid and amount on the receipt matched.

This is worse than doing the shop when there is a bus there. You can't win.

You have some good points, but I would not say I would PIF for the exact cost of my meal. To me that sounds petty. You either play the game or you don't.

I'm anticipating it being thrown out, as this MSC is a stickler for the rules. But I will ask the MSC what to do when it happens again. I'm sure it will because it's a pretty popular thing. I read about one restaurant where the chain continued over 200 times!

I was in line one day, and a guy tried to buy the coffee for the person behind him, and she refused to accept it. He even tried to explain.

Anyway, I was thinking, since it's a drive-thru, how do you know they aren't just making it up and keeping the difference for themselves?
Did a costco shop...waiting to pay. Old man...80ish...had his debit card declined. He was baffled as he shuffled on his flip phone to call his wife. I felt so bad for him...eggs, grapes, milk...etc. I told the cashier I would purchase for him.
Totally confused the cashier...as she handed me a torn receipt with nothing on there but, my q-tips. The manager could not print me another receipt...had to buy another box of q-tips just to get the receipt!
I hope the grapes were good!!! LOL
I told him to pay it forward! made my day...
So far so good. Got an email from the helpdesk and they think this was wonderful! They passed it on to the editor. Waiting to see what happens!

I think if it happened to me, I would freeze for a minute and my receipt would be my most important thing I could get at this store.

I would explain what happened but not sure how the "reimbursement" would work out if the customer in front of you paid? Perhaps the MSC will pay you, as there is no way you could have paid.

it Forward, they need to work that in the rules!smiling smiley
Hopefully your receipt doesn't show that your order was paid by credit card. They will surely reject it then. Unless, of course, they go along with the whole pay-it-forward thing, which I think is unlikely even though the help desk thought it was cool.

BJayM - what a very kind thing for you to do!! I'm not big into the PIF, but seeing someone having his card declined and helping out - well, that is just the best!

One time I saw a woman try to buy just one bottle of Downey fabric softener. She didn't speak very much English, and was confused when her card declined. She seemed upset when I then saw her pull out a checkbook to write it out for the few dollars the Downey cost.

I always regretted not just offering to pay it for her, but it all happened so quickly that I barely knew what was going on until it was over.

Maybe it wasn't a McDonald's shop though, since OP made no mention of the client... Of all the fast food shops I recall off the top of my head, McDonald's is the lone ranger in requiring cash payment for their main MSC. All other fast food spots were OK accepting card.

Shopping the Greater Denver Area, Colorado Springs and in-between in Colorado. 33 year old male and willing to travel!

Oh ya. I didn't notice that. Thanks for clarifying.

Huh, I have never heard of this game and I am glad I never did. So this is a game of russian rulette where you are just playing for fun as it sounds like it has absolutely nothing to do with the concept of Pay It Forward? This concept sounds like a gamble for the sake of gambling and having some fun. You are certainly not helping someone in need. What if the car in back of you orders for 10 and you ordered for 1? You not only lose on the price gamble but you might lose on the mystery shop if they do not accept it. Hope you had enough fun playing the game that it was worth the cost of 10 burgers, fries and drinks! Another reason not to do drive through jobs for me.
Bah, humbug!!!
