Agree 100%. I did four of these and couldn't back out after the first one... never again. That was like $2/hour. Owch.
Where are we going... and why are we in a hand basket?
I did a bunch of these... OMG! Terrible! I am very new to phone shops and I learned my lesson the hard way. Apply for one to see the report and then apply for more... I assigned about 8 of these at once was probably one of the worst days especially since it was supposed to "be an off day". Lesson learned and noted.

I did several. On the last one, the salesman was a little snot to me about how no one can give a price over the phone/you don't buy cars over the phone etc. I wanted so bad to say hey, I'm just trying to do my job here. Not scheduling any more of those!

Good think you had that little snot because I would have gone off on him. I personally know two people that do that or at least until they spent all of the lottery winnings they had. See my post for ulcers.
Just the time spent on the phone isn't worth $4, let alone the time for the report. If they really wanted good reports, they should be willing to pay more.
I just self assigned 8 of these shops. I don't have too many shops for the company so I thought this would help me boost the chances of getting future shops.
I didn't think they were that bad. The calls are pretty short and the narrative is not complicated. It's not high pay, but we all know that going in.
Edit: Oh God. I just saw, with the same MSC, a compare/contrast shop where you call 2 dealerships and go through the same ordeal as the $4 shop. For $5.

Oh wow, I just completed some shops and spent about 25 minutes on each one. Definitely not worth it. 
This MSC has dropped their payments substantially since I did my first shop for them this past November.
Ypou need to be available for two hours in case they call back with the information. This is not even close to worth it. I got another email today trying to get people to do these. There are lots of locations available.

I know exactly why there are lots of locations avaible. And I know why the "visit a Kia delaer plus one competitor to be specified and take a test drive if offered and get a business card and a quote" for a total of $10 in fees are just sitting there untaken also.

We "live and learn." But then, who doesn't take a "not worth it shop" when nothing else is happening. Of course the longer we have shopped, the longer we will "wait" before doing so.
I did a few of these low pay non-phone shops. Not worth it individually, but it was nice when the $130 came in.

If I was sitting at home and had 2 hours to wait, then the $4 might be attractive. But those 2 hours currently represent lost opportunities for me. Trying to do these while driving around is dangerous, and invariably they call back when you can't talk for one reason or another. I do a shop for $2.25 because I can do it when I have time, and because I know that it will take less than 5 minutes from making the call to reporting it.

Makes you want to send them a bill for extra work required. As if they care about false representations.
