Where/how did I say that using cash promotes identity theft?

Also, how does fraud on a debit card equate to identity theft? If someone steals your debit/credit card number, does that mean (to you) that they have stolen your identity?

A bank will, not might, will, protect you if your cards are used fraudulently. No ifs, ands or buts. It's a law.

My bar audits required using cash, however, this month the MSC sent me an E-card used the same as cash to pay for drinks, food, etc. When I travel I need to notify my bank (credit union) that I'm going out of town and where I'm going...they will not accept a charge from out of town unless I tell them. This is for my debit card, and now with the chip and pin, I have no worries. Never had anything happen, if you notice an odd charge, they issue a new card right there. I can stop payment online for free. Since I don't want temptation, it works. I don't pay interest....In this business if a company doesn't pay or a report is rejected I don't have a fight. I only work for MSC's that pay, but when I opened this I didn't know and wanted to be safe

Irene that's awesome that your credit union does that. I use my debit card because I get cash back every month. Crappy Credit Union offered cash back annually. That was nice, but they could never explain how I got it.

Yes, my credit union is the best. I also get cash back every time I use my debit car, it's automatic. I changed from years at B/A we i moved up here.. I was looking to buy a car, that's how I found them.

Saying credit cards are so safe is just false. My Brother-in-law and sister were traveling, and in London had their CC# stolen and 8,000 charged, talk about a mess. These things are not preventable, and credit cards are no safer than your debit card, plus for a shopper like me, have proven dangerous. My bank account is not used completely for work...I know what I can spend and work with that in mind using my debit card. We all work differently, find your own safe way, what works for one, won't work for another, why put someone down for finding their own way...if I took half the advice on the forum, G__ help me!!

My Crappy Credit Union offers great rates but only to the first few who apply (or relatives of employees).

No plastic is safe, however there are laws in place to protect consumers. Banks act as though they are doing us a favor by refunding our money, but they have to.

I did a bank shop today. One of the features of the debit card was that they refunded any fraud right away. I told him that it was a law, and they had no choice.

Best Buy has HP printers (all in ones) for $30.

BB&T has cash back for Potbelly, Subway and Five Guys.

Is anyone doing the Krispy Kreme shop? RetailMeNot has a coupon for a free donut with a coffee purchase.

Actually no coupon needed. For the month of February purchase any coffee and get 1 free original glazed donut. Yum.
Is anyone doing a shop at Timberland? BB&T has 10% cash back. They also have 10% cash back for 5 Guys.

Same with Bank of America if you use one of their debit or credit cards. I'm waiting for my milkshake shop before I use the card that will yield that reward. smiling smiley

isaiah, in my experience, thieves don't drain a bank account at once. They do a withdrawal of a few cents and increase the amount until the account is drained.

Because I monitor my account, I stop the fraud when the few cents posts. Then I get it back. Those pennies are mine.

Why is a debit card safest? In addition to the information Buffalo posted, any fraud under $750 is immediately returned to your account. If it's over $750, then an investigation has to be done.

With a credit card, the holder has to pay $50.

With cash, you have no protection.

...... I've never had to pay $50 in all the times my credit card was stolen and fraudulently used. One of those times included charges as high as $1,500, which was reversed and investigated immediately.

How do you make online purchases? Hopefully you don't have to call and let me know whenever you're buying something online.

Credit cards, which are not directly tied to your account is safer than carrying around cash, ATM cards or debit cards. It might be a headache to go through whenever large sums were stolen like your family's experience, but I'd rather have the thieves not touch my checking / savings account or cash, which is basically untraceable.

But totally agree, Irene, we all follow our own ways. Since debit works better for YOU, no problem!
