Anyone know if the the package is not accepted by the Post Office, can you buy a gift card instead of stamps, envelopes etc.?

I asked this question of my scheduler once and at first they said yes but there were none at the post office I went to that time. I asked again before my next Hazmat shop and the same person said no. If you find that it is acceptable let us know. I would like that as an alternative.

That's good to know. I did an Authorized Shipper shop today at an office supply store. When my package wasn't accepted I purchased some loss leader school supplies (notebooks for 25 cents, folders for 19 cents). On the way out of the store I tossed the supplies in a box where they were collecting supplies for a local school. Good karma never hurts.

The shop guidelines list a four pack of stamps or shipping supplies if package is refused.
What in the world is a 'four pack of stamps'?
If books of stamps are purchased is only one booklet reimbursed or may we buy stamps costing the max as the reimbursment ?
If the location is an office supply store will we be reimbursed for copy paper or pens?
If it's a ups store will we be reimbursed for greeting cards?

4-packs of stamps are common. If they don't have them, they will just tear off a block of 4 and sell them to you

You can buy stamps up to the max reimbursement. I do that pretty often with no problems ever. A "normal" book of stamps is 20, which works out fine. Sometimes I buy a couple of rolls of packing tape instead. Never had a problem with that, either.

I have never done any locations at office supply stores. I also have never had a package refused at UPS so never had to buy anything else since they always send the package.
UPS store sends my packages about 50% of the time, so I have a lot of stamps from there. They mark them up too.
A couple of days ago at UPS the clerk asked what was in the package and I told her it was a laptop battery. She asked if it was lithium and I said yes. She accepted the package without further questions. I've done many of these at UPS with various scenarios. They always ask what's in it, I always answer with the scenario, they always ship it.
I did 2 at UPS stores last week where the clerk weighed my package (without asking what was in it) and they told me that they couldn't take a package for USPS that weighed over 13 oz!!!!!! One of them even went so far as to put a UPS label and charge me for UPS shipping before I noticed and insisted on USPS shipping. So they refused because my packages weighed too much. Also none of the ones I went to had USPS signage or any other indication that they accepted USPS packages. It made me wonder if UPS is going to refuse USPS packages altogether very soon.

Wow, that's crazy! As if 13 ounces is a lot of weight. Maybe the clerk is a true idiot and couldn't read that it stated 13 pounds, not 13 ounces.
I think 13 ounces is the maximum for shipping first class and that's why the 13 ounce limit. But still . . .

Sassy..did you fill out the form yourself on their computer and enter what was in the package? If so, the system may have automatically declined the shipment for Priority or displayed a warning that the clerk actually read. Most times they seem to ignore it. Since it was over 13 oz., it would have to go Priority for USPS. Just guessing here, but maybe that's why she said they couldn't send it USPS. UPS will send it because they fly their own planes, but USPS uses commercial planes and can't fly perfume or lithium batteries. (at least that's what a postal clerk told me).

Actually the clerk with the weight issued didn't get any farther than weighing my package. She weighed it and told me she couldn't take it because it weighed over 13 oz. If they couldn't put regular USPS stamps on it they couldn't send it, she told me. I got an email back from the MSC about this shop. They wanted to know exactly how much it did weigh and what its dimensions were. I answered back. I guess that's all they wanted to know.

I had one today with the laptop battery scenario. I took it to the counter and when the question was asked, I told the clerk it was a laptop battery. She said she didn't know if those were lithium or not so she was going to ask someone. The gentleman next to me at the counter turned and told her that laptop batteries were definitely not lithium. He told her he used to sell them so he should know. She took his word for it and accepted my package for shipping. It was all I could do to keep myself from contradicting him. But I refrained and so I lost another rock. sad smiley Oh well. .. .there are plenty more rocks in Arizona.
