How do you guys explain mystery shopping as your job to family and friends?

okay time to stop feeding the guy that lives under the bridge, folks.

All I am suggesting is that we stop feeding the innocent public lies about making $60 dollars an hour mystery shopping. Why do we need to lie and misrepresent the truth. Why is it not good enough to just tell the truth which is they can make money mystery shopping but they better not try to live off of it?

When you first get started, you will see $4, $10, $12 jobs. You will get free hamburgers.

When you get better at this, the companies will offer bonuses. I have gotten $75 or $100 for car shops. I started at $20. My husband did a car shop for $150. I did a shop that took three minutes that paid $90, but normally pays $12. Companies reach out to you when you prove your worth.

You will not start making $60/hr. When you are a proven entity, the amount you are paid will go up.

Yesterday I took a picture for $4. That's what I started with. In six months, after 26 jobs, that company has paid me $112. That's nothing. If that is all I ever did, $60/hr would seem illogical.

People are not lying. You might not be making that money right now, but just because you are not, does not mean other people can't.

That's all well and good but early on in this thread 2broke mentioned that she'd been at this for like 8 years.

Boy, sobroke is showing his jealous streak. SoCal Mama doesn't live in a slum and neither do the rest of us. Instead of wasting your time lamenting on what you don't have and posting envious and spiteful comments on what the rest of us make, sobroke, why don't you get industrious and sign up with more MSCs. Or get a job as an employee somewhere.

I do not know where she lives but what I do know is that the story of a MSC or Casino reimbursing a shopper 500 cash to play at a blackjack table is FAKE NEWS!

Follow along please.
Up to $1199 was allowed for the shopper if they won. I won $1199 on that trip.

$500 high limit
$300 for 3 tables
$60 at each slot
Room, f&b, spa etc came to well over $3,000
Instead of feeding the troll, let's feed ourselves!

I love zucchini, but please don't bake with it. My MIL makes zucchini bread that everyone loves...except me.

I wou,d never put this on a real job application. First, you are blowing your cover, and it also may not come across as a professional job, depending on what you are applying for

I do not agree. I think it is important to include this on a resume because for some people it may be necessary to fill in the gaps in their employment history. Also, as a mystery shopper (or customer service evaluator as I sometimes call it) you are an independent contractor. You are self employed. You are running your own small business. There is no shame in that, and some employers might actually be impressed.

You're not blowing your cover. That's silly. You're telling one person in HR what you do. Big deal. However, that same person heard from a million people who work boring office jobs. When you are able to entertain that person with some fun facts and stories about an industry that everyone thought was fake and a big scam? You've won.

You can say you're an independent contractor that does customer service evaluations and facility inspections.
Most people I tell that I audit business'. Friends who live far away and family have gotten full explanations.
Thanks for the great recipe idea, wales! BTW...I did one of those stores yesterday. $91. End of month madness. In addition to that store I did 7 gas stations at $36 each. Plus another grocery store for $60. True, I drove 233 miles. Piece of cake.
Also, I tell family and friends I am a Corporate Compliance Officer.

I just bought a box of Brownie mix, and will be eating brownies and Almond milk way before you guys get a recipe for anything.....

hmmm, I need one for a smaller cake. Using half a cake mix, etc. just doesn't cut it for a small household.

It looks delicious and I have fresh organic cinnamon. But two boxes of pudding? The sugar content might disqualify it for me. Then again I might try it anyway. I have other victims to feed it to besides myself.

You could freeze half.

That Jello sugar-free pudding mix doesn't taste bad, I have had it before. I actually made pudding with it and used almond milk as a substitute for regular milk and it was decent, so I would guess in the cake it would be even less noticeable that it has aspartame instead of sugar. Oh, and if you don't like aspartame, at Whole Foods and Earth Fare they sell a pudding mix that has stevia in it (Simply Delish) that's really good. I have had that one many times and it's really tasty.
Or divide it and put half in a ziplock or an air-tight container and keep in the cupboard. If you freeze cake mix, does moisture get to it and make it clumpy?

I am also wary about all of the pudding mix additions.
