Gas Station Audits how long does each brand take on average

I remember someone covering the length of time for a few gas station audits, but I could not find the post. I know those that can do these in their sleep have a system to cut down the time.

With the current guidelines, how long does Shell, Exxon/Mobile, Valero, Gulf, Chevron, and BP take? I know I am missing some others that might be regional. I am sure that the duration is influenced by a a few factors like number of pumps, how crowded the store/pumps are, and the like.

Which one is the worst?

So many variables. Generally 15-40 minutes, add another 10-20 if you report onsite. Shell hardest, the rest about equal.
Shell is the worst.

I'm old and slow, so I budget 1 hour on site, especially if using an app to report on site.

I use a cheat sheet.
Exxon about 20-30 minutes, Shell about 30-45 minutes, Valero - 15-25 minutes, Haven't done BP since two were declined due to pouring rain...and I was soaked through

I love the Chevron POP audits.

I've completed one in less than 13 minutes before.... Keep in mind, I've done 11 of these audits so far.

The first one I did took about 40 minutes.

These shops require that you be quick to take pictures and upload. Having a tablet with cellular connection REALLY helps. Also, for the commentary, use voice dictation!
If they don’t have a time allowance, I ALWAYS do them at night. Faster, no need to ask them to turn on canopy lights, and way less traffic. I can get 2X-3X more shops done past 9 PM.

Early Saturday and Sunday mornings also are great times. No traffic, no customers. I breeze through them.
What about Gulf revealted? There is one about 5 miles from my house and it's $30 plus $3 reimbursement.

I've done about 4 Exxon/Mobile shops. Is Gulf comparable?
When possible take photos in the same order as the report.

Complete report on tablet or phone.

If you are not familiar with the station, Goggle it to see how many pumps it has. I may still do one with several pumps but will def ask for more $.

Keep a cheat sheet in the car for each station, like what photos ate required. Eventually it becomes automatic, but can be confusing when learning multiple stations at the same time.

Carry cash. Some require in store purchase in cash. Some will charge .50 cents for using a ATM card or if purchase is under $XX.
Gulf is easier because you don't need a pic for every pump. Beware, though, right now they are all darkness shops, the ones I see, anyway. So check for that.
Thanks everyone. I had Gulf and Valero shops that have since disappeared. I am not too concerned since the Valeros dropped off the board a while back only to return a few days later. The only issue was that not all of them returned. I think the hidden due date was either 12/08 or 12/18 and was hoping for a bonus. The Gulfs were paying well, but we'll see if those come back.
Did my 1st Exxon mystery shop/Reveal. Good on you guys on having the time down to 30 minutes. This location had 16 pumps and it took me over an hour and I am not finished yet. I got all my pics, but haven't uploaded the pump pics yet.

I was not counting on having to learn about OSA branding -- what is current and expired. I am not including the time spent looking at the branding beforehand. Waiting on customers to move from pumps was not the issue since the majority of pumps were not operational. I know the staff were a little chatty Cathies. Odd how quick the time went.

Looking at another Exxon that is either a 4 or 8 pump location to do as my second audit. I don't want to spend an 45 minutes to an hour total to make the base rate. It isn't bonused yet like the other one I did.
Your audit time will decrease once you have a few under your belt. Keep going! Base rate still bites, though.
Look on Google for a picture of the station (address) to see how many pumps each station has before you determine what amount of bonus you will need to do the shop.
Any language barriers on these shops--do you have to interact with the behind-the-counter folks?

Just be cool folks.

If you live down near the border in Texas, I would hope you would be able to speak enough Spanish to get by, if that's your worry.

For one of the audits, you have to ask the employee to take a picture of them, below the neck. This shows they have the required shirt/apron/uniform on. They can also refuse the picture and you place a sign on top of the check out counter and take a picture of that.

You also have to ask them to turn on the outside lights if they are not already on.

And lastly, or should I say first, you have to communicate to them you are going to be taking multiple pictures of the station, inside and out.
For at least one brand the LOA is also available in Spanish. Of course that doesn't help when the worker speaks a different language. I've been refused by Arabic and Vietnamese speaking people, in addition to new hires that spoke English, who had no idea what I was trying to explain. They probably didn't want to get in trouble with their boss but I think there is some penalty to the station when they refuse. It's the manager's responsibility to let their staff know these things. And we get "Reduced fee."

I tend to default to the counter photo when a language barrier exists. My Spanglish is good, but lately I have been running into a lot of other langauges. I generally communicate well enough with gestures. Refusals are not a problemt, as they eventually pick,up the phone and call someone. I give them some benefit of the doubt regarding greetings and such if their body language makes up for it.
More than one time i've had non-English speaking attendants use their phones to translate what I'm asking. I think they were both Turkish or Indian. I speak into their phone and they answer back and show me the screen. First time I thought it was funny and strange, but it works well.

Doesn't sound worth it to me....of course that is what I said about the oil change shops...now? I love them.

I agree with Shell being the most tedious. But I also know time of day is a key factor. Early am when folks going to work and getting coffee and gas. Also, quitting times in late afternoon. All the landscaping folks getting gas/snacks. One has to wait for them to move from the pumps. But I really enjoy doing these.
Just did my 1st Mobil last night in about a year. Took 45 minutes on site. Yes, I just took a ton of pictures to CMA as the station was fully compliant. It did only have 4 pumps. I only took as it paid $100 and was 30-minute drive for me. If I do anymore now, I know what to do again and will get that down to 30 minutes on site. Report takes 20 to 30 minutes to label pictures on computer and enter. $40 local is my minimum rate and more for distance of course.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.

Nice to hear, I took a few of the $100's I saw and I have just been fearing that I was going to get an "oops that was wrong" email. smiling smiley

Hey Buffalo,

I know you do or did shops near my neck of the woods. I accepted a $100 shop along the Canadian boarder, built a route around it and got it cancelled the day before. Be wary. Just a heads up.

I had done the shop previously for $100 and thought, let's do it again as it made financial sense. But the route screwed me when they canceled this anchor shop.

The scheduler who sometimes posts on this board asked me to do another distant shop and I declined stating I had a shop pulled from me and she said she would never do that.

YMMV.
I've done a lot of the Exxon, BP, Shell so my times are not for first times. Exxon usually 20-30 minutes with the report. BP 15 for visual and 25 for full evaluation. Shell 25-45 depending on how big the station is. Add 15 minutes of you are still new to the brand.
