Not for free, but I see a fair number of them at Goodwill for $5 or less here. Goodwill here usually does a decent job of making sure equipment is working before they put it out for sale. As long as the scanner is not really old (or moderately old but you are using Vista as an operating system), software and drivers to run it can generally be Googled on the web.

Big Lots often has inexpensive new equipment and the office supply stores such as Office Depot, Staples and Office Max often have clearance of printer/scanners that have been floor demo models or are an older model.

EBay often has older computer equipment and if you can find it in your area you may be able to pick it up from the seller rather than pay shipping. Similarly Craig's List may have used equipment. Sometimes folks even put a 'curb alert' up when they are putting equipment on the curb that works but is outdated.
Not free but cheap. I bought one of those three in one copier/scanner/printers at Wally World for under $50

the staples in my town charges $1 to scan an item onto a flash drive you provide.. kinkos and copymax both charge $2... if you do that be sure to get it into a format you can view... jpeg is the most easily viewed and widely accepted..

you have to have money to make money my friend... sad but true..

FreeCycle!!! It's a Yahoo group, who's primary goal is keeping things out of the landfill as long as they still have life left. I actually just got an All-in-One from FreeCycle. I see this type of stuff on there a lot, just join the group and place a "Wanted" post... I've gotten great stuff from FC, including a fantastic full-blooded TRAINED all-black German Shepherd that I adore (the group no longer allows pet postings)

As for ink, I refused to pay the crazy prices at any local store ($45 for plain black!? Whatever!) anyway, I was happy to find compatible ink for $15 and have had no problems with it, online from InkTechnology.com

I've actually got my eye on a used Brother laser printer, on CL, but didn't have the extra $$ right now yawning smiley( Hoping it's still there when I get some cash to spare
Thanks for the freecycle info. I never pay more than $14 for black ink. Is the $45 for a 2-pack? Also there are stores cropping up that will refill empty cartridges for 1/2 the price.
ack found out the hard way that copy max changed their prices to $4.32 what a rip... for one scan! are you friggan kidding me?? it took them 4 minutes... which means they made $65/hour for scanning...

Actaually major scanner problem. Looking for Tech Savvy. I Keep getting a cannot find message when trying to scan. I have tried to do everything possible. Unplug replug speak nicely to the machine. Any ideas?
Depends on the printer... Mine sends pdf document scans to one folder and picture jpegs scans to another.

Documents are under my documents and then my scans

Pictures are under my pictures and then my scans

I run win xp and an hp all in one

If you have a manual check it, or you can do a blank search in the start file under find... Should be close to control panel
