Founder of Westboro Baptist Church dying

Just saw this story. Last I had heard, they were picketing the funeral of Hailey Owens, the little girl from Missouri who was kidnapped and murdered. They have done many revolting things, I remember when they came to Joplin after the tornado which killed 158 people, several of which I knew. There is a special place waiting for him.

Too bad, so sad. Guess he is gonna get a little surprise on the other side.

These people are evil incarnate. Believe what you want, but how DARE they perpetrate their evil on innocents. >: (

A freind of mine once said this of a similar person, "I pray for him every day. I pray that he gets exactly what he deserves."

Fred Phelps, I'll see you soon. Kidding! I won't be seeing you.

Speaking in my other persona as a minister of a church, I can truthfully say that ALL people bring joy to the world. Some when they enter it and others when they leave. This man fits the second category.

I wonder if his own people will picket his funeral since he was excommunicated? That would certainly be interesting, wouldn't it?
I thought the article quoted his son and it was the son who was excommunicated by his father.

This is what one of his sons said: "I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the "church" back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas." It states his children were estranged from him.
Okay, I missed that part and focused on the next paragraph,

"In an interview with Patheos, Nate confirmed the statement was true, saying he'd spoken with several other family members who, like him, had previously been "excommunicated" from the church."

If Sr. was in charge and excommunicated others, who excommunicated him? More importantly, will this change of leadership also mean a fundamental change in their ways?

Who knows how those crazies think. If he got excommunicated in 08/13, they are still operating as usual without him. Doesn't look like any major changes.
how much interest this man deserves in life and in death:

Perhaps I can now play a country song by one of my favorite singers of days gone by--Roy Clark singing the classic "Thank God and Greyhound You're GONE"

Wouldn't that be a karmic @#$%& slap.

He was misguided and had a distored view of what being a person of God means. I pray for his soul.
I do too. I pray it stays in hell along with all the other people who preach hatred in God's name.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
I thought God lovers were supposed to love the sinners too. I'm not hearing any love here.
Wanderwoman, I think you are confusing "God lovers" with God. It's very doubtful to find people who will have "love" for a man who pickets innocents funerals and says "God hates fags" and "Thank God for dead soldiers". I for one do consider myself a Christian, perfect by no means. And as an imperfect Christian, I cannot find it in myself to have any love for that kind of hate.
I do not identify as a Christian (or a practioner of any other organized religion for that matter) because the faith left me years ago due to the likes of Fred Phelps and his ilk (I am on a personal and self-lead spiritual journey).

With that being said, I did not wish him ill will as he began his personal journey to the next stage in life. On the contrary, I wish him the love and peace that he would not bestow on others. I wish that this year's gay pride events/Memorial Day festivities/etc. praise him for the change for which his actions were the impetus (I believe most good-hearted people saw his hate which helped them to gain better understanding of others). I hope that when he meets his Creator, he requests and is granted forgiveness because it is that type of God that I pray exists. For me to think otherwise would deem me (just me, I am only speaking about myself) a hypocrite.

(As a human, I did not like what he did and what he said, but as a veteran of the armed forces, I will defend his right to say it. As a person who wishes acceptance from others who do not readily accept me, I too must be open and loving to all. That openess and love is challenging at times but I must do my best to succeed in order to stay true to myself).
Liam, I for one thank you for serving our nation. You will never find a more patriotic American than I. I proudly hang my Grandad's flag above my fireplace. He was a preacher in WWII. Three children, 14 grandchildren. I have no idea how I was the lucky one to get it, but I cherish it.
Here is a piece from an article I just read:

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a church spokeswoman and Phelps’ daughter, said she was concerned people outside the church would try to picket the funeral service.

“It would be in extremely poor taste if someone were to protest my father’s funeral just because they disagreed with him,” she said. “Everyone is entitled to respect in death. What monster would go out of their way to upset my family when we’re grieving?”

Phelps-Roper dismissed the claim that the church’s unusual request is hypocritical, given the members have picketed the funerals of U.S. soldiers and murder victims.

"My father was a great man who did no harm to anyone," she said. "So what if he beat his own wife and children? Doesn’t any good, loving father do that?”

I honestly, truly believe this has to be a joke. I don't believe those words would seriously come out of this mouth. I almost think they are trying to get the biggest crowd possible by making everyone more mad. A few years back I saw Fred in an interview saying he hoped people picketed his funeral. I'm pretty sure that is the goal of this story. And what is that last sentence about????
Are you sure that article you read wasn't from the Onion? winking smiley
