I was betting 'Onion', myself. I checked. Looks like it was the Daily Current--same difference.

I simply view him as a misguided media troll. Very similar to the Forum trolls, only with a wider audience and attention-seeking followers.

Lisa, that was awesome. I had some friends who were there and said it was amazing to watch them get in their vehicles and run away like scared little girls. Okies love their state and their country and don't take kindly to people trampling their beliefs! This was all over the local news (not sure about national), great story! Makes me proud!

The odd thing is Fred Phelps was said to be a brilliant civil rights attorney back in the day. He starting fighting for the rights of African-Americans back in 1954. Civil right activists could not believe the change in him, as he never spoke badly of gays back then. They said he was just as passionate for the rights of African Americans as he was for his hatred of gays. There have been many articles about his activism as an attorney-just Google it.

Spork, I have always found it so hard to believe that anyone could really think that the way Phelps did. So, do you suppose he didn't really believe the the things he was saying and teaching to his family? If not, what was his purpose? To gain attention and infamy? To play "devil's advocate" in order to unite others? Financial gain? Or did something in him just snap?

That is a good question- I just don't know. I think he suffered from mental illness. Many believe sexuality is fluid and he perhaps he had homosexual urges that scared and disgusted him.
