Sorry your computer went south on you. I started shopping in 2009 and I'm now using my fourth computer with a fifth computer on hand as a backup. I run with a backup computer all the time and I've never missed any work because of not having a working computer. This system lets me buy my computers when I can get a really good deal on them and I never have the stress of worrying about my computer going out or when it will go out. I've discovered that all of them will go out eventually and I may as well be prepared as surprised.

Like MSDavis I always have a backup computer. Consider it a business expense. If my computer goes south on me and I want to enter a report I go straight to my backup computer. It certainly saves a lot of stress.

Break out and get yourself a new computer, it will pay for itself with shopping for sure.
This is a major inconvenience. I hope you had good backups. It's hard to find a computer that lasts long term. How about the techies on the forum, what is your recommendation on a good PC for mystery shopping? Scanman, techman?
at least it broke during a good month to buy with black
friday coming up

I also have a back up computer to be sure. In emergency, I used to go to the library or webcafe.
Sorry to hear.. that always sucks!!

I've gone to the library in the past when my computer crashed. I've used a smartphone/tablet in lieu of a computer regularly. If you can, take a look around on Craigslist, eBay and local stores. I bought another laptop two weeks ago for $400 (12GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive, etc). It was on clearance for $799 and I talked the sales person into selling it to me for $400. lol

My computer went out on me suddenly at the end of July which was good because I was do to receive my check about that time. I also backup regular and have different syncing online backup sites that I know will have most of the files I need. If not I have a 3TB backup drive that'll do the trick. I agree black friday and holiday sales probably will get you a better deal on a new one so their is some favor to it going out as it did when it did. I was just building a website for my domain at the time and freaked me out when I left came back few hours later and it was dead. Microsoft One Drive is ok for documents and photos but for me I take lots of pictures and videos and that is time consuming to sync to their servers much less when I got 2TB plus it does not fit on the free space Microsoft offers. Just thought I'd say some thing since I had the same problem no so long ago. Best of luck to you finding a good deal on new one and enjoy shopping.

Mod note: nice try! but spammy link removed. smiling smiley
I have my laptop in case this one bites the dust. It a custom build (by my spouse) and it's 6 years old now. It's got a brand new hard drive (1Tcool smiley and processor. There are 3 computers in our house and one smart phone. That should do it. I back up my stuff all the time on an external hard drive.

Good luck with getting a new one. smiling smiley
I thought I was well protected with extra PC, laptop, tablet and wireless phone but that did not save me last night when I was up to my ears in reports with a deadline by midnight. Two from same MSC would not go through with download. Today I got threatened with citation before the scheduler responded to my earlier messages.

Everything is now resolved and I have no idea what happened to their website. I just sent the receipts as attachments in my email. The scheduler took care of it without explanation. Guess I would avoid doing any shop for them for a while.
Am I the only who noticed that relatively clever Spam post just above Canuck's?

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of your time and it really annoys the pig.
For computers you are going to use all the time I would recommend buying a business class computer and if you buy a laptop for sure and if you buy a desktop, and space is not an issue buy the largest case it will have the best airflow and heat is what kills computers.

The Dell outlet has some good deals and 4 -6 times a year Dell will have coupons for 20-30% off which can make for a great deal.
Many of the business class computers will come with 3 years of next business day service so you don't need to bring the computer anywhere and it will be fixed fast.

Dell has a nice 12" laptop for 644.00 with 8GB of RAM and a solid state hard drive ( won't fail from being dropped) with 3 years of onsite support.

They have a 20" all in one for 552.00 with 3 years of support and a touch screen. The 3 year warranty is worth about 200.00 squaretrade wants 250.00 it includes accidents but you have to ship it back.

I have more computers than you can count on two hands but the other day a simple connector failed in my basement and killed my internet connection took me 3 hours to figure it out!

That was when I was trying to print my shop paperwork for the 13 shops I had the next day!
I replaced my laptop and ugraded to a new one with Windows 8 on it. I transferred most of my files to it as the old one booted up for a while but I lost part of a book I am writing. Firefox sync saved all my MS bookmarks and my supplier bookmarks for my webstore. I am back and running and trying to rmember what I lost in book
If you still have the drive you could try putting it in the freezer and see if you can get it to work. If when you turn it on it goes click click click it is pretty much gone. If it not making a noise like that you might still be able to get more data off of it.
There is a program called Spinrite that might be able to help, if you have some computer skills

[www.grc.com] it is 89.00 so you need to decide if it is worth the && or not, but I will say that I do own a copy and it has helped me recover data.
I have a friend who does computer repair. if I need anything from the drive she has all the tools to get it. My problem is I accidentaly deleted the file when tranfering to the new computer through a flash drive.
