What are you doing today? (besides shopping)

The brand name is Dak [or perhaps DAK], and it appeared to be available at Walmart, among other places.

Canned ham... we never had them. We always had the huge, bone-in things which fed a lot of people before the bones flavored soup. But the canned hams were in... oval shaped tins? The key, a bit like a wind-up for a toy but not at all the same, was on the tin? This is more of a trip down memory lane for me than useful for Mert. Back to the present. A quick search showed Hormel black label and Celebrity canned hams in the little oval tins. I wonder if these are similar to DAK?

I vividly remember those canned hams! My mom would pick one up every once in a while. The cans were different sizes. My mom would get the larger ones, about maybe 12-15" long and sort of skinnier at the top and wider at the bottom, almost pear shaped...and about 4-5" deep. Someone has stirred up my memories!! And YES, I remember the key!!! Sometimes it would break off half way on opening it, then my mom would have to get the can opener and finish opening it up! I know in the recent past that I've seen them in the stores, but can't remember which stores, since I wasn't particularly looking for those. I have to go out grocery shopping today....I'll see if any of the stores I go to still stocks them. Funny, I hadn't thought about those in a long time. CVS may carry the smaller ones, about 5-7" long.

Yes I remember the canned hams. I think they were basically Spam. Anyway, good luck finding those anymore. I see that Amazon has them but the price is a bit unreasonable, IMO.
Walmart has the best lemon pepper rotisserie chickens. Thanks for the reminder, I'm adding one to my pickup order.

Give me a lemon pepper rotisserie chicken!!!! Love it. But I haven't bought one in awhile since I am not frequenting stores. I might just get a whole chicken and put it in the crockpot at some point in the near future.

AFA HonnyBrown goes with her SBCB, she has like 14 pounds of it, LOL!!!
We never got them as a 'treat' but rather as emergency supplies. No pantry was complete without shelf stable protein so there was always a ham, tuna, peanut butter and then usually some selection of beef stew or spam or corned beef in cans. These had to be used before expiration date and replaced with fresh supplies and as a kid we did not look forward to the meat from a can dinners.
As a kid I loved the pancakes my dad made with thin slices of fried spam inside. I also still like canned corned beef sandwiches or made into corned beef hash.
My mom used to have those tiny cans of Underwood deviled chicken and ham that you spread on bread for sandwiches, along with those horrible little Vienna sausages, smoked oysters, and sardines. Gross.

When my dad would come home on leave during Vietnam he would bring K-rations with little cans of meat that looked and tasted the way dog food must taste (it smelled like dog food anyway).

They still sell Spam, I used to have to rearrange it on the shelf with the other canned meats during grocery resets.
The tinned hams were NOT Spam. They were definitely ham. I seem to remember that the Dak brand came from somewhere in Scandinavia, possibly Denmark.

On Walmart's website, they have Hormel Black Label, Dak, and Spam (also a Hormel product) as the most likely choices. But Dak is the only one available through online ordering that is still in stock.
This reminds me of something else: food pantries. Canned meats are on a published list that I have from a food pantry. They can use boxed pasta, canned or bottled sauces, boxed or canned soup, the mentioned canned ham, Spam, canned fish, canned chicken, boxes of tuna & crackers, boxes of chicken & crackers, other crackers, and often baby foods, and pet foods. Some can distribute diapers & other supplies.

Sorry for the tangent.

No. The 14 pounds of chicken breasts that I bought were fresh. I froze them when I got home. The chicken that I cooked in the crock pot shredded perfectly and tasted great in the chicken salad.

The stove top poached chicken was difficult to shred. I shredded half and cubed the rest. I'm going to make a stir fry with the cubed pieces.

Had the chicken been thawed and then re-frozen and you bought it this way without knowing what you were getting? That is the worst! Selling it in that condition should be illegal, too...

Spam (SPiced hAM) is a big seller in Hawaii. It's sold out at the grocery stores here, but stocked at the dollar stores. When I had my Spam craving a few weeks back, I got some awesome recipe ideas from their website, but went with my go to recipe.

I'm cleaning my countertops. Not the several times a day wipedown, but the move everything and clean it and under it and behind it.
Last year, the church that I work for had extra Thanksgiving boxes so they gave one to each of us that worked there. It was full of canned items, including a ham. I would have rather had SPAM, but I put it to good use, chopped it up in a macaroni salad type thing and used it for soup. I would never purposefully buy one of those things ever. I also used to work at CVS and remember stocking those stupid things, but I don't remember ever selling one.
As far as rotisseries, my Dad made his own over 50 years ago (I wasn't born yet, but everyone loves to tell the story) He rigged together something with an old tv antenna. He also made his own smoker that my brother still has and uses to this day. I think it's what made me love gadgets so much today. He would have loved to see me use my air fryer. smiling smiley
It's been yucky all day, I am dying to go outside, even if it's just on my balcony. They opened up the beaches on my island to walking yesterday, but just for 2 of the 3 beach front towns and I'm in the town with blocked access still. Yes, I live on a 5 mile island with 5 different municipalities lol

It's supposed to rain tonight, so Hubby and I walked during his lunch hour. Then I made a trip to GFS- my list was spinach, mushrooms, and barley. They were out of barley, so I substituted a couple of half-price Cadbury eggs :-)

OMG I love those eggs, they make my teeth hurt just thinking about them! I haven't eaten one in years sad smiley
I hadn't had one for a couple of years, but it was as good as I remembered.

Canned ham mission was accomplished. Canned hams were not hard to find, I just hadn’t looked before. I didn’t find canned hams that opened with a key. Made an executive decision that the key was not as important as the canned ham. I bet a dollar to a doughnut that the cans will never be opened. Peace of mind is worth a lot and my friend got that.

Another plus for me, I found a wholesale restaurant supply store, open to the public. Never knew about it, after living here over 20 years. Looking forward to the day when I can get a cart, go inside, and fill it up.

I really appreciate everyone’s assistancesmiling smiley
The degree here has been 97ish, with a cool down Monday in the 80's, but back up Wednesday. Cannot go out, stayed in doing computer stuff, and cleaning my shoe area out again, then after dinner took a nice walk, watched the news and re-opening' in some state's.
What will the "new world" be like, I know I'm saving money and not working hasn't be a negative, as no gas, not buying if it's on sale, very careful about purchases and when shopping grocery stores, always went over my limit, not just getting what is needed.
Many lessons learned, and being wasteful was one.

Live consciously....
So the snow melted before I had an opportunity to build a snow person. I did not have anything to put on it anyway, besides gloves and a mask. I thought about this too long, but it is for the best. I could not contribute in any way to a new normal in which people might see that and be inspired to sing 'Frosty, the Snow Person, was a dippy, flippy soul... with a medical mask that hid grin and nose and two PPE gloves (nitrile)...' I just couldn't do it. *shudders* But this is the new visual normal in the world. How sad.

Moving on to something a little perkier... I am slowly de-caffeinating and found coffee beans that seem wonderful. They will arrive in a week or so, and I will enjoy trying this blend. Even de-caffing can be an adventure!

Geranium day is always a good day! I have a possum to deliver to the country. Then a few trips to the attic and laundry. Then clean the bathroom.
I moved all but two small appliances from the counter into cabinets. The empty space will go to my cutting boards and utensils.

I'm going to pot a windowsill spider plant clipping later. Since that seems to be the only houseplant I can grow, I'm going to put another clipping in the windowsill.

Love those things. The trick is to let them outgrow their pot and then they will throw the little plants.
I found hanging pots of geraniums. At the widest, the spread is over 3 feet ! Three red, one bright pink and one white are now filling most of the open spaces in the front garden, hanging from holders that now just barely do not touch the ground, lol. We will have the pots with hangers for next year and just buy replacement plants to fill them. This was the easiest "gardening" I have ever done, lol.

Cleaned off the patio furniture. Cleaned up the pool deck. It was 95 here yesterday, too hot to clean outside. It's only around 90 now. Heading to a local yogurt store to buy yogurt (not for me) and make a donation to her rent fund.
So the early job is a little late, but.... what can I do!?

It is Sunday, and I am reminded of a sermon (or something) about food, of all things. Apparently, it is bad form to insist on one way of eating, such as with or without meat. So I made my Sunday morning prayer about food and me. Help me to refrain from presenting a dogmatic view of meat-eating even as others present a dogmatic view of other eating styles. Instead, let me seek out the people who might be able to impact the food industry in such a way that meats can be processed safely and industry workers can return to their [probably modified] jobs. If this approach is successful, all people can eat in the style of their choosing and no people can exert inappropriate control over how others shall have their chosen foods.

So that was the little peacekeeping mission for the day. Later, I have a small task list and a new book.

CQ, delivering a possum to the country? Can you fill us in on that story, please?

Last week we had snow; today it's gonna hit high 80's.

Planted green beans and squash.

I am surrounded by elderly/ill people who get Meals on Wheels Mon-Fri. No meals on Sat and Sunday. So today I'm cooking for those neighbors, BBQ pork, potato salad, slaw, deviled eggs, and baked beans.

Since Nebraska gifted food stamp recipients with an extra $200 this month, I decided that was a good use of the extra food funds.

I love cooking, and this also keeps me from eating all that! I'm fat enough already!
