Should you ever ask how much someone makes....

You may not know anyone, but a lot of us have known each other in a way for years and a fair number of us have met face to face. Personally, I find it more odd to be asked by a stranger than a friend.

I've probably asked a few no-no questions and stuck my foot in my mouth a few times. I've bounced around from a few different jobs since getting laid off months ago and then spent some time away, yada yada.

This place can get a little nutty. There was a forum member who use to haggle me but I can't even recall the persons shopper name. I think I may have toggled them.

At any rate, this place is still quite valuable if you dig around and just blatantly ignore (now that's an oxymoron) the ones who try to chap your arse.

That was a simple fun question. I don't know any of you personally or face to face. If I did, I would never ask. Don't we all share what we got for a particular assignment? I didn't know, a question like that on a forum where no one knows anyone personally could be so offending. Please feel free to not answer if you don't like the question.

You are absolutely right about the thread you started. To you, it was a simple fun question. To many of us, it seemed a rude question. I think what struck me as rude was that you shared none of your own information until AFTER other posters commented. So you want an answer but shared nothing.

As for feeling free to not answer if you don't like the question, feel free to not join a discussion thread to reference a different thread and argue about it if you don't like what is being expressed. It's not so easy to not comment when you don't like the topic, is it?
Jeez!!..Thank you for all your replies. I had a fun time on this forum for a month. Learnt a lot of things. My apologies for offending some people's sensibilities. I really never ever wanted that. This is my last post on the forum. It was great knowing you all. I joined a few companies due to some valuable contributions from members. Valuable lessons on time management and shopping tips.(Thank you Mountaincacher88 and spicy1)

I am leaving because I don't want to post something and worry about offending anyone. Maybe I chose the wrong words for asking a question, but a post as simple as this brought out questions of class, manners, respect and what not!! The other day someone had posted something about what they felt was an achievement for them and I was surprised people belittling the post and saying those don't count as achievements. That was nasty. My energies would be well spent in finding some good jobs rather than going through posts like those.

Thank you all and happy shopping!
Ranges of wages and salaries are published. We all presumably earn varying amounts of money in this industry. We may have other jobs. We can scatter social hints about our presumed income, to make a statement or to invite a disclosure of assets. Quietly, we can investigate. Is this better or worse than a blatant inquiry?

I have no opinion.

I think your question is personal and tends to show the way we're raised. My raising included learning it is not right to ask a woman's age weight or how much she makes. I understand your not thinking much of it but I thought you were wanting to see if this industry is viable for you. then you tell us you make very decent money, had you offered that first the question wouldn't have been so bold for a newcomer and stranger to the forum. Many times it's the way the same question is asked, but on a forum with many different opinions, this is opening a discussion as to right or wrong and of course we are all going to chime in.....your posting on a public forum and expecting answers, some you may like, but many you won't.....you seem nice enough, too bad you got off to a bad start, there are many things to learn here.

I personally don't care if it's considered right or wrong, when people are face to face. In this forum I think people can ask whatever they want to. If you don't like the question, don't answer it. People writing here are all ages and races, and come from different parts of the country and maybe the world. I don't think we should be projecting our beliefs on this topic to anyone else.
I wouldn't be so bold as to say the OP "got off to a bad start' as much as I would say some ideas are old fashioned, stick in the mud, I want to orchestrate what is acceptable based on my ideas and feelings toward openness based on my upbringing and I'm a woman of a certain age and that makes me special.

We are NOT face to face nor do we know the newcomers...face to face means looking another in the eye.
Many of us have been on the forum for years helping others and have met one way or another...your being new and knowing as you stated above you don't care what's wrong or right is quite telling of who you are.
Threads are written to be answered or we wouldn't have a forum discussion with different opinions. I trust the shoppers who post and help others while not begging for our personal info......and I don't care whether you like it or not. Since you don't care, how much do you make per month.......oh right none of my business.......

Wondering what race has to do with it, especially since most of us do not know the race/ethnicity (or for that matter, the age and socio-economic status) of other posters.

Culture. Culture is probably a better word than race. When people use the word race, others get nuts. Culture is the word they teach us in college, that they should teach in junior high, to describe the basic and wide differences in our belief systems. Our culture is basically the ideas, and how we use those ideas, that describe the world as we perceive it. Oh, gotta go, my sweet potato fries are done!

While I hate to see a new poster leave before they really get started, I would like to ask one question before you go. You said in another post that you would obviously never ask someone face to face but felt it was ok since this was on the internet. If that is the case, why are you surprised that people had a more visible reaction since in your oponion the rules are different on the internet?

I suggest you continue to read and post. I would just suggest that you either only make statements that you would make face to face, or on the occasion that you do offfend someone, don't get offended yourself when they let you know.

Instead, why don't people just respond to posts they feel positively about? I mean, that's what the "Mystery Shopping Magazine" is all about. How to make $1k a month.

The OP didn't ask how you felt about someone asking you how much $ you made last month mystery shopping! The OP wasn't asking you personally.

Why tear through yet another perfectly fine post with such snobbery? It's like you people are drunk or something!
Wait a minute. One of the most reactive people on the forum is trying to tell people to only respond with positive comments or not respond at all? I mean seriously how many posts have you had deleted for personally insulting people this week? 20? 30?

Ok, just like the ex. Bring up the past. How far do we go? 1 year? 2 years? forever?

I'm talking about this stuff right here.

I didn't say to only respond with positive comments.

I've deleted ZEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this week zerooooooooooooooooooo

I deleted one in which I told my current position at work.

You wear the crown for personal insults, or did you not know that?
HA! I wear the crown for personal insults? Please.

BTW, the answer to my question was 3:

Wow, you have time to go pull up past posts?
Post #1 was perfectly appropriate. I was defending Irene, in fact!
Post #2 was perfectly appropriate, I was again defending Irene.
Post #3 was perfectly appropriate, I was AGAIN defending Irene.
ALL of these because of MooseHoose and his nuts.

I won't do it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It took me all of 30 seconds to click on your name, click profile, click all posts, and look at the ones that were moderated.

And I am not interested in knowing about mooshoose and his nuts.

\25 and Lisa could say she made $250. What have you learned about the pay for mystery shops?
The final caveat is that back then and even now, it has always been an individual choice when asked about income. Either you choose to give an answer or you choose not to say. A lot of people are asking mystery shoppers to determine if it is feasiable for them to join the group. Most people are asking to find out which shops pay the most so they can focus on them. There are threads for those seeking general mystery shopping income information. As for others, let them ask. Here's the answer:

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS. IT IS A PERSONAL CHOICE!. I may be able to negotiate a better deal for myself because I am saavy that way, doesn't mean that others will automatically get the same deal. I have a rich resume with tons of experience companies will pay for that. Especially if you focus on making THEM money.

I am sorry that you were driven away. I, too, have to take breaks because some people outright attack you for your statements sometimes. I mean everyone should be able to ask questions and share what they are comfortable with. I hope that you will give this another try. Not everyone is rude. Not referring to anyone in particular because everyone here is usually helpful. We've gotten away from being nice with our posts lately. I am going to try harder. But I understand when you just refuse to be treated poorly. Just give it another try and block the people that you don't care to share with anymore. It is called toggling on this forum. Because you will miss out on a lot of GREAT INFO if you go away. smiling smiley
