But, yes, college students will eat anything.

Some college students will eat anything. Others are... finicky... or snobby.

When I in college, it was a Very Big Deal to eat at certain restaurants. Sometimes, we got dates who could afford this. At other times, we saved our pennies from our college jobs and spent them at expensive restaurants for small portions of real food. We were absurd, but we grew out of that phase. Now, it is not a big deal at all to eat at certain places or to eat certain types of food. It is just necessary to give nutrition along with some pleasure to the habitus. grinning smiley

Restaurants at my daughters college town and everything I've seen around University's has inexpensive (but good) Mediterianan food and she worked in the excecutive dining room as a waitress, and was on a food plan, we paid for, hence, all gain those first 15 pounds. I was very involved then, and trust me, those kids weren't hungry. kids going to state colleges live at home and their parents feed them, and of course McD's always there.
Guess it depends on what you see in life that builds your experience...I do see a homeless person standing on a freeway stop with a sign asking for money, never a cold pizza. I've heard them refusing, just wanting cash. Whatever, if it works for you, do it, I really couldn't find a hungry college kid in my town with two colleges who would accept a cold slice of pizza. Would be an interesting survey for those that do Papa Johns and an incentive to do more (if it works). Great job for families, kids love pizza, not great for those (me) living alone, eating healthy and throwing it away, not to talk about the pic's where I hear horror stories on the forum.

You live in SoCal, though, and probably not near places like El Monte. Many kids who are working while going to school and paying most of their own way are fairly broke. Last year, I would order pizza and pay from here and have them sent to my daughter's dorm, or catch a good Amazon deal on soup and do the same. It certainly boosted her social standing. A lot of the kids were living off ramen.

"Let me offer you my definition of social justice: I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree? Well then tell me how much of what I earn belongs to you - and why?” ~Walter Williams
I totally understand, location is everything. I remember years ago, bringing my daughter who went to Northwestern in Chicago my homemade chicken soup when she got very sick, carrying it on the plane.
What a laugh that brought, as the kids told me there's a Deli across the street. That cured me, imagine,
the smell on the plane. Don't kids go home, I'm sure their family feeds them. Today, with all the crazies out there, who would take food from strangers. The beautiful park in Santa Monica is full of homeless because they have a soup kitchen daily, they lie in the sun, and get a hot meal, while urinating in the park, and ruining it for everyone else. College kids today are fussy about what they eat. een 2 years old have preference and many are so picky, just not feasible here. Student loans are given for those that can't afford it, grants, you'd be surprised the money given to smart kids that work the system.
Trust me I'm all for helping when it really helps......I think sending a full pizza to a dorm a better idea, I would do that, but have to drive to the college and get in, and they may not accept ia stranger bringing in a package, t if you don't have a student going there or they don't know you. Things are very tight these days with packages.

It saddens me to see the amount of food we waste as a society. Just look at any restaurant, especially a buffet type place. I try to waste as little as possible at home. I compost what I can.
Produce goes to waste often here. When we have parties/abundance of food, my neighbors are absolutely thrilled to have a plate of food and dessert delivered personally by me, one of my kids or DH. There is never a thought about them thinking we think they cannot afford food, LMAO! And vice versa. We love it! The other day my DH picked up a dead squirrel in front of our neighbor's house. She was so grateful she sent over delicioso home made pizza, salad and Apple pie.

My teens and their friends? They would love a pizza donation any time. Yes, we and they can afford pizza and fine food. Bring them some JAS, :-)
! You're a nice lady!

There are many cities where non profit organizations have started programs and collect food from grocery stores that is still good but at the tail end of fresh, and offer it to anyone interested. Definitely need more of those. Some have also started small gardens and get kids involved.
L.A. is one with food banks, collecting food from huge grocery chains every morning. Food is good (one day old).
What they don't sell for reduced prices they give away next day with nothing being thrown out... L.A has many homeless in the city areas and free soup kitchens daily. I have to say giving food to strangers and giving homemade food to neighbors is a different thing. We used to have block parties and shared food totally different.
