Calls are being made to US Citizens from foreign call centers. The robo call claims that your social security number has been compromised and thus suspended. The receiver of the call is advised to press one. The Social Security Administration is aware of this.

It is truly annoying. We still have a landline (in addition to our cells) but are seriously considering discontinuing it. We are on the 'no call' list and nevertheless get 4-6 calls a day that are some kind of scam or solicitation. They come through with spoofed numbers, they come through as Pakistani voiced Microsoft 'repair services', solicitations for money for the police to lobby the state legislature, for free back braces using only our Medicare number, for reducing our interest on our credit cards, and on and on and on. Yes, supposedly our social security number has supposedly been used in San Antonio for fraud so further payments will be suspended.

The robocalls are just the tip of the iceberg and now that we are approaching elections there is the dinnertime calls wanting to ask 'a few questions' of the voters in the household. Those I always hang up on because they are part of the GOP 'dirty tricks' routine around here to cast aspersions on their Democratic opponents by asking loaded and prejudicial questions. They always ask for the Democrat in the household (we have one registered GOP and one registered Dem).

It has taken way too many years for Congress to do anything about robocalls and requiring that our service providers protect us from them--which they have had the technology to do for years.

We, too, still have a landline, on which we get several "junk" calls a day. We keep it mainly because in case of emergency, a 911 call from a cell phone doesn't always give the exact location of the call, but sometimes pings the closest cell tower, whereas the landline gives the exact location. So....in case of emergency, we have the landline. I suppose we could save money by keeping it ONLY for emergency 911 calls (which you can do), but we still do use it for SOME things, so there you go.....

We keep our landline because we are unwilling to give out our cell phone numbers except to a limited number of individuals. We have a portable phone system with phones around the house so one of us has a phone nearby to not have to hurry to the phone when it rings and if one of us gets in trouble we can call 911 or the other person to come help. You are absolutely right about the inaccuracy of the cell phone location. Every few months the police show up on our doorstep because they have gotten an emergency call hang up, probably from somewhere in the RV park nearby.

I got rid of my land line a couple years ago, but if your on the computer, they still get your cell#,,,,no escaping the scammers....annoying doesn't begin.

They are on a roll today! I've had four calls so far, and it's just now 1 pm. I have been threatened to be arrested for falsifying social security accounts (umm what?) told I won the $100K prize in a contest I never heard of (just needed my bank account info to verify my identity!), asked if the National Police Association of Retired Officers could count on me for a 'small' $100 donation (yeah, look it up, no such charity), and an offer to lower all my credit card interest rates and fees to zero. Lucky me. Lucky, lucky me. My phone has a hang up button.

I just got a cell phone message saying to call the Officer in charge as my Amazon account is on his warning list....funny thing, I have no Amazon account nor ever used Amazon......

I have a landline with an answering machine. No, I do not answer it.

I've been cell only for 10 years.

The next time the scammers call, I'm going to tell them my SS# is fake.

Don't answer, I also block all the numbers, but more pop up.

This was on my email, yes I check emails....

Why would you not answer your phone? I answer unknown calls in case it's an emergency. Thankfully, it never is.

I kept getting an automated call every morning for getting a student loan, I've been approved. I finally answered to tell whomever, I am a senior and not interested in students loans.....wouldn't you know I was speaking to a machine, and can't get rid of the calls, would love to change my #, but we know what that involves.

Irene, I still have my LA number. About once a month, I get calls from my area code and exchange for a credit card. I have asked over and over again to be removed from their call list, to no avail.

Yesterday on local news, two women fell victim to a mortgage scam and lost their homes.

I just got the Social Security scam on my cell......

Also, we have Caller ID and NOMOROBO on our landline. Cuts down on numerous scam calls getting through. Also, we NEVER answer calls from numbers coming from our own area UNLESS we know for sure who it is. Scammers/Telemarketers now use numbers in your local area to try and make you think it is someone you know. We just let it go to the answering machine.

If someone who knows me calls and I do not answer---they will leave a message. Or I will pick up the phone during the message to say I couldn't get to the phone fast enough before the message machine kicked on.
Too many calls get past NOMOROBO that look legitimate.
DD2 called me from across the country a few days ago--on a borrowed phone with an ID that looked like a offshore schedulers' name. We had a good laugh when I DID pick up that call. My Mom spidy sense knew it was a legitimate call.
