My laptop died yesterday!

Then came on this morning for short while. What do I check first? It won't come on again. It's 2.5 yrs old.

The very basic is a power issue.

Does it operate when plugged in to a known good outlet? Is the little light next to the power input to the laptop on? (On my laptop the plug into the computer is not perfect so sometimes everything looks plugged in but it is not making the contact to power the machine and need a little wiggling.)

Obviously check that the plug into the transformer box is snug and hasn't been kicked loose.

If it works plugged in, you likely have a little icon in the tray for how fully the battery is charged. If it is not showing as charged, give it some time to get charged. If it will then work on battery power you are probably fine. If it works plugged in but not on what appears to be battery, you may need a new battery, though the laptop batteries usually last more than a couple of years.
I'll try again. Many thanks. I'm so glad I have my smartphone. My Roku and tv are ok.
Your laptop will work without a battery. The risk is bumping the cord and losing everything immediately. My HP laptop battery (my sons actually) didn’t last very long, but we dealt with it for a couple of years before we went out and bought a new battery.
My laptop died a few months back. It was the charger. Not having the model number (because it was dead), I ordered a similar one from Amazon and it worked.

The battery has been shot on my HP laptop for a few years. If it loses electricity, even for a second, it shuts down. It has to be plugged in and works just fine. One of these days, I'll get a new one. I finally had to get a new iPhone, after the old one would no longer even charge.
In meantime I'm using Moto! Got apps for here, email and surveys!! I used points for surveys to get new battery. Thanks y'all ????
My laptop works ok now but I do have new battery on the way. Strange...... Hey it works now. It's much easier doing surveys on 17" screen!!!
WOW, and here I was thinking I was the only one with a bum battery, haha! Seriously, my battery lasts about 25-30 minutes when my laptop is unplugged, so I keep it plugged in all the time....unless I accidentally pull it out of the laptop unawares, and then all of a sudden everything....goes....dark....But other than that my faithful Windows 7 laptop works fine. No sense me investing in a battery, because sooner or later I need to get a new laptop.

Well that's odd! What happened?
laptop works fine and Amazon let me cancel new battery order. All is well. I have no idea why the laptop didn't work but it didn't. I used my smartphone!!
So Lucky 7s and heather shops are the same person? Good to know.

Laptop died again. I ordered another battery. If it happens again, I can check fan and charger. I really don't want to buy another computer as I love this one. smiling smiley
SCM why does it matter?

Well, it just died again. I think it overheats. The fan was on but it was warm. I have a new battery coming Monday so I may as well order a fan. Everytime I play rento monopoly it gets warm. The last time the laptop died, I was playing rento monopoly. Lol. I forgot my sign in info so I'll use this one. smiling smiley

That has been forum policy when a member is attempting to deceive or return after having been removed from the forum by the forum owner. Is that what you perceive to be happening here? If so, perhaps the most appropriate response is to notify the moderators with your concern.

There are a number of folks who have re-registered because they have lost a password or they have been out long enough they don't remember their user name or they registered with an ill advised user name. There has never been objection to those situations.

Same person is back and forth on the same thread, so it's not a password issue.
Yes, spicy1 has come back under more than 20 names. I lost track. There are a least a few others that had multiple IDs and were asked to choose one.

If, like me, the user has their computer remembering both user name and password, the failure of the computer would mean that they (or I) would not have the computer to automatically fill in that information to log in. Once the computer was working again, the remembered automatic fill in would fill in the old user name and password. This thread is about having issues with the computer. I see absolutely NO intent to defraud so absolutely NO reason to raise question.
I am having problems with my computer. What is the problem????? GEESH. I have nothing to do with anyone spicy. LOL
Vacuum the computer gently. Especially at the fan intake. It gets dusty and blocks airflow.
You know I did a search after the last time it died and it said to take can of air and blast the vents. MANY THANKS sestrahelena........smiling smiley it works today. I haven't played rento monopoly. lol
Yeah, don't jinx yourself.

I've done that too with my Windows 7 laptop. But I also bought a laptop cooler off Amazon for about $14 about 7 months ago, and that has made ALL the difference. To see if heat was the problem, I first downloaded a very small .exe file called Core Temp. It keeps a running temp of your computer in the small bar at the bottom of the screen. I set mine for Centigrade readings, because the Farenheit temp was going up so high it scared me!! But even at Centrigrade, once it got up to 99 or 100, my laptop just shut off....died. I had to give it time to cool off. I would also then clean everything out with the can of air, but it was happening too often, and I would also get that BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). So after doing some research, I got the laptop cooler. What it basically is, is a device about the length and width of a laptop, and about maybe an inch thick, and it goes under your laptop. Mine uses a USB cord to keep it powered, so I don't have to use any outlets, just plug it in to my laptop. Mine has 2 fans, but the fancier ones have up to 5 or 6 fans! I saw an IMMEDIATE drop in temperature!! Now it rarely goes over 80 degrees Centigrade, and it has NEVER CONKED OUT since I started using this laptop cooler. I know my laptop is on the "old" side, but it works well, so this has helped tremendously to keep it going. Maybe something like that would help you as well!

PS....Playing games would definitely raise the temperature of your system, so that may indeed be the cause.
