Huge Fed Tac break if you got Federal UI supplemental UI payments in 2020

If you got Fed UI payments in 2020, don't miss this provision of the new stimulus bill: Even if you had some Federal Tax withheld from your payments you probably would owe more if it were not for this change!
Tax Exemptions for Unemployment Benefits. I had my stste withhold Fed taxes but would have owed still more. BUT, now I have a hefty refund due to me.
Here is what the new bill does:
The first $10,200 of unemployment benefits will not be taxable for those who earned $150,000 or less in 2020. This amendment to the legislation could save taxpayers thousands of dollars each, especially for those who did not have withholding taxes taken out of their unemployment benefits. If you already filed, you may need to file an amended return. If you have not yet filed, you may want to wait until the IRS updates Form 1040-1 to account for the appropriate "exclusion from income."

YES, YES, I have confirmed that this applies to 2020 UI income !

Also, if you have children, be sure to check out other new provisions that may provide significant benefits to your family.

Wow!!! I imagine tax preparers could be counting the minutes until it’s wine-thirty.

Not taxing a portion of UI is great. I thought the Child Tax Credit, however, was stellar and my favorite part of the bill.

The earliest periodic payments (looks like they have yet to decide whether they'll be monthly or quarterly installments) have been said to begin in July for the CTC.
I certainly agree about the child tax credits. In DC alone it is estimated that that will elevate 29,000 children out of poverty levels.

They say they will keep this page updated so presumably they'll post it when they get Schedule 1 revised.

Hubby had already filed for the year, so he will be doing an amendment.

Update from my meeting at work today. The paper worksheet for Schedule 1 is out re: UI; Intuit and other well known tax programs are working with the IRS to update their software. Intuit estimates the updates will be available tonight? I have not checked. Seems too quick, especially as the software needs to be tested by the Feds/IRS. The IRS advises no amendments be done for 2020 returns until further notice.
