Food Bank

Food that is given cannot be stolen. It can be received. I do not know enough about anyone to determine whether any food bank/food pantry customer is misusing gifts of food or not. That is for each donation site to determine.

A food bank that is funded Federally or a charity using the 503c election are doing so with the stipulation that food be distributed to people who cant afford food. If the food bank doesn't follow the guidelines or if a person who is not needy takes advantage it is stealing. Maybe some of tbe 87,000 new IRS agents will ferret out the grift.
While I don't use food banks because I don't have a need, I know there are plenty of working families with or without children that find it extremely difficult to have enough rations to feed themselves. In this great nation of ours, I feel it is unconscionable that any American or those "living in America" do not have enough to eat. It is certainly not something I would get on my morality high horse and worry about. There are other issues that I prefer to spend my time worrying about.
The federally funded food banks, or TFAB, require users to show proof of need by showing their government assistance card. This is not the food bank I am referring to. If you are on SNAP or EBT, please sign up for these programs.

The ones I am referring to are not need based. They are for everyone to use. You show up and grab a bag of food. There is no shame in using a food bank.

Nope. You're wrong.

Where does the funding com from?
The food pantry near me accepts corporate and private donations of food. It also has a federally funded component for which we are not eligible. Does the fed send food or just provide funds to the distribution site for the neediest patrons? People who are eligible for the federal component have a different set of rules for accessing free food than the rest of us do. Do they get more visits and more food? Anyway, I am grateful for what we receive. Everything helps now.

Corporate and private donations.

Visit a food bank to see how they work. Better yet, volunteer at one!

I volunteered at the food bank yesterday. I was in training for my new role as Director. We had eggs to give away. It was a good day!

I visited the food bank today. They changed the format, and it's now a walk in. It's like going grocery shopping. There were shopping carts when you walked in. When you were done, boxes were available to hold everything.

They had bread, pastries, canned goods, produce, and chicken. And snacks!

As long as there is enough food for those who are deeply in need - AND - as long as the recipient is not hoarding the food (sadly this happens) - who cares where they are on the poverty spectrum?

There are too many other things that need our precious time.
Maybe not a food bank but this CBS Reports is interesting, especially if you're worried about climate change and where food banks get some food or what grocery stores do with their outdated products.

It's about 22 minutes long but I found it very interesting.

Ironically, people "deeply in need" refuse to visit food banks. They don't seem to want to acknowledge the severity of their situations. I let them know it's always there for them.

There will always be food hoarders. Better too much than not enough.

Inspired by an episode of a cooking competition show, and armed with similar free ingredients, I made a great salad for myself. In the show, contestants were given one dollar with which to purchase ingredients that cost a few cents. One Scallion; one slice of bread; and other items that I have forgotten. The winning chef made an appealing salad with finely sliced bread and something else. I tore my Romaine and slices of bread and nuked them. I like the warm lettuce, but this experiment does not involve wilting with hot bacon fat. It is only on the extremely cheap. Then, I added bits of my healthy oil, ACV, and fave spices. Good. ! The salad could handle nuts, veggies, or chicken. The protein and texture would help. But it is good as is and involved no outlay of cash.

I need to find that show and re-watch the episode. Tubi, here I come!

I got about 6 pounds of bacon from the food bank. I save the drippings, but I forget to use them. I keep them in a nice crock I got from Freecycle.

Hmmph. The chef competition show has departed from Tubi. Oh, well. There might be some similar recipe online...

Search if it's streamed on FreeVee formerly IMDB.TV or Pluto, two other free streaming services.
Thank you! smiling smiley I will do that just as soon as I I find the name of the show. Curtis Stone was one of the judges judge, if I recall correctly. I will search for his cooking contest shows after I finish here.

(Speaking of Curtis Stone, did anyone else like 'Kitchen Little?' That adorable show is still on Tubi.)

*eta*

The show is 'Top Chef Masters.'

I visited the non-need based food bank on Saturday. My box was packed with a lot of sugar. I don't use sugar very often, so I gave most of it to my neighbor.

Today was my volunteer day at the food bank. I ended up sleeping in. I finally partially cleaned my kitchen.

I visited the food bank today. The format is now walk in instead of drive up. It was a train wreck.
