Paypal doesn't charge you, and there's no contract. I think that's only if you're an Ebay vendor. I've had an account there about 5 years.
I use Paypal for almost all of my payments. No fees charged that I know of and its an easy way to keep shop money separate from my checking account (which I prefer to do). You can transfer it easily to your personal accounts if you choose to.
Their service agreement and percentage are more if you are a seller on Ebay, where they do keep a small percentage of the proceeds. However if you have an individual account and are a buyer on Ebay or are just receiving money from an MSP I have never seen a charge. There was some chatter about a particular MSP charging shoppers to pay them by Paypal--supposedly "passing along the fee"--but I have never run into that and suspect it is as bogus as an MSP that is all too often late with their payment and too often indicates it is a Paypal screwup.
I prefer Paypal payments because it is immediately cash and there is no question as to whether the check from a faltering MSP will bounce. Checks get "lost in the mail" a lot more often than payments get "bounced by Paypal". Direct deposit is good but I only want my banking information with strong, reliable companies and most of the time when I sign up I have little notion how reliable the company is.

At the Paypal website www.paypal.com You can often catch a link from a shopping company's sign up but easier to just go directly. Make sure that the email address you use is the SAME as you are using for your company sign ups and if you want to transfer money to your bank account (or savings account), have the routing number and account number handy when you do your paypal sign up. They will send a tiny deposit (a few cents) through to the account to verify that the numbers work and you will then confirm back to them that the money arrived (so it is helpful to check your account every day or two while watching for that tiny deposit).
I was reluctant too Beverly but I did sign up with Pay Pal. I had a few bad experiences with Pay Pal doing Ebay.
But things have gone great with my being paid by Pay Pal. Like Flash says you know the money is there and it's not going to bounce like a rubber ball.

I've never seen any money taken out. I do bank transfer and there is no cost from my total.
And I've never noticed a fee in my "details" report about money from a company either.

That is the same with me, though I am aware that one MSP was mentioning charging a fee--which I suspected was the MSP rather than Paypal.

But things change rapidly. I just had an email through another company for a merchandiser @ $13.50. And if the job takes more than an hour they tack on an extra $8.50 in addition to the hourly wage. Hummmm...

I suspect what they mean is that the first hour is $13.50 and any additional time required is $8.50. Ergo, 2 hrs = $22 total and 3 hrs either still the $22 total or perhaps $30.50 total. I sure would clarify.
I will clarify for sure!! I've responded by email telling "whoever" I need much more information to be able to make an intelligent decision.
Even at $13.50 an hour this is the highest paid merchandising I've ever seen in my area. I'm thinking it's not the typical since typical is $4-$5 per hour. Even 8.50 is higher than I've seen. :-)

Could be Her. So far none of my companies who pay by Pay Pal have taken out a fee for use of Pay Pal. I did get an email from one saying "if you haven't signed up with Pay Pal go sign up and update your profile. A fee will be charged for check writing"
With CRI I have stayed with the direct deposit, for which there is no fee. I believe they were the company I had heard was charging for Paypal. I think it is important that a MSP have at least one method of payment for which there is no expense to the Independent Contractor to be paid, and with fees as low as they are, I'll take the free way, thank you very much.
I use Pay Pal also, but beware there is a scam email going around that requests you to click on their site and update your information. Also, the ID code is different than your original ID code if you read carefully. Other than that everything looks just about identical to the pay pal site. I became aware and reported it to pay pal. It is calle phishing. It was a phishing email.
There's always someone trying to "phish" Pay Pal. Was happening several years back when I was selling on Ebay.

How do you know when you receive money from a mystery shop company into your pay pal account?? Does Pay Pal or the mystery co. send you an email?

I believe the MSP sends it to you. They certainly come from the MSP's address. I have never received one before the money was in the PayPal account, so I assume there is electronic notice sent from PayPal that releases the emails (because the MSP notice is always very shortly after the money hits PayPal).
I have received both. I received a notice from paypal and I also received a notice from the mystery shop company that payment has been made.
I have a premier paypal account and have only once had fees taken out for my msp pay.
A ms company used a cc to pay shoppers and I was charged a fee but the msp promptly paid me back the fee. I am paid via paypal by 29 different ms companies and have been receiving payments for four years all the time w/a premier account. No problems at all.

I'm also curious about the fee that is sometimes charged by Paypal. Only one of seven companies that has paid me by Paypal has charged a fee. That was CRI and it charged 3%. I promptly switched to direct deposit for them and now get those payments without fees. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Beverly, the MSP probably will send you an email saying money was sent and Paypal will send you an email saying a deposit was made.

I have now signed up for pay pal and thanks to all of you for the info. given. I just received a payment and was notified by email. I then went to paypal and had the money transferred to my bank and it was easy. You have to sign up with paypal and enter the bank info and it takes a few days to clear. The company that paid me did not take fees out and pay pal did not either.

I was told it has to do with the size of the MSP company.. As Bugs said if the MSP pays with a CC or only pay a single check, or a few manual checks, there is a fee. If the MSP pay you in a "bulk" payment there is not a fee.

If you request a check to be mailed to you, which I do, they charge $150
