I did this one back when it was $100-something for pay. It could have been a bigger disaster than it was. During the purchase, the employee only gave me the credit card receipt, and I knew that wasn't going to work because it was mentioned more than once. I kept asking her, "Shouldn't I get something else that shows what I purchased?" She swore up and down that that was the only receipt they ever gave. I left with a bad feeling, knowing I wasn't going to get paid for this.
So, five minutes later I go back into the store. The place was packed with people. When it was my turn, I told her what was going on, and that I needed to return everything. Apparently, they weren't allowed to do a return until they talked to the manager, who she couldn't get in touch with. It just went downhill from there. She finally talked to someone and got the okay. I'm standing there and what do I hear? A PRINTER! Next thing I know, she has a long, itemized receipt in her hands for the return. I told her that was what I'd been trying to get from her when I bought the phone, and I asked her to print it for the purchase. She handed me two long receipts, and I went home.
When I was looking at them, I noticed they were both for the return. At this point, I was on a mission, and I was getting paid for this shop come hell or high water. I went back over there, spoke to a different employee, who knew exactly what I was talking about and was happy to print the first receipt for me. Bingo. I was paid without any issues.
Regarding the $700 reimbursement - there's nothing saying you have to purchase a $700 phone. Buy a cheap one (there are plenty of those to choose from) so that if the worst does happen and the store says they can't/won't take it back and you have to ship it to "the blob" to be reimbursed, you're out less than $100 rather than $700.
If your path dictates you walk through hell, do it as though you own the place. -unknown
