Maritz editors changing reports

I guess that's why there edited, but Maritz returned one of my gas shop reports to me with a question this week and I noticed that they also changed three of my "yes" answers to "no" without any explanation. If they expect us to make no mistakes, why wouldn't they tell us when they have to make changes to our reports? They're a very frustrating company, even thought they're my bread and butter.

I noticed the same thing - an editor adding a comment. At the end of the report I more often than not put NA in the additional comments section because I have nothing pertinent to add. The editor returned it to me for another reason and added "The banker made a good presentation" in place of NA. "Good presentation" is totally subjective. But like you Hoju, I like bread and butter.
All the companies tinker with reports. They want the best reports possible to go to the client so the bread and butter flows into their pockets as well.

I had one bank shop for them come back to me saying i didn't write the visit number on the rate sheet. .... well there are two pictures of the rate sheet required now and supposedly the close up is fine but the full sheet isn't. ... ummmmm yea right, I wrote the number on there before taking any pics.

I upload directly to the form so I don't have the pic to look at and the thumbnail image is so blurry but whatever I just re-uploaded.
I've had that happen many times. It bugs me greatly when an editor thinks that what he/she can see in a 640x480 photo more detail than I could when I was standing there. I wrote to them the first two times, as in, "That was NOT damage to the curb, that was a shadow," or, "That was NOT damage to the pump facing. It was wet from rain." Not to mention they would use my required photos as their own deficiency photos... so much for not using the same photo twice!
They never replied to my corrections of their corrections, so I gave up trying.
What really killed me was the turning of comments in the home improvement store reports into beginning reader children's primers.
I submitted, "When I entered the department, the associate immediately smiled, made excellent eye contact, and greeted me warmly by asking how I was doing today."
This was edited to, "I entered the department. The associate smiled. He made eye contact. He asked me how I was doing."

I am from the old school of proper English sentences and punctuation. This sound like a bunch of "run-on- sentences". While it sounds okay, the associate apparently did "all" of those things at once. The editor felt it would be better understood if phase was different. Besides, the periods are given you time to "inhale" before answering the question, commas do not.smiling smiley It did not change what was said or done.

It does not sound over the edge. We all want our report to be accepted. If they correct a sentence or two, whats the harm? They get paid I get paid. smiling smiley

OMG--the editor's "edits" are juvenile sounding and don't flow well at all! I think your original sentence was fine. If the editor thought it was too long, it could easily have been broken down into two sentences and still have sounded like a literate adult wrote it: "When I entered the department, the associate immediately smiled and made excellent eye contact. He greeted me warmly by asking, "How are you doing today?"

I like to use direct quotes when relaying a short greeting or closing, so that's probably how I would have done it. But the editor's re-write is not good writing, nor is it any easier to read than your original. We have to strike a balance between being factual and concise, and writing so that our sentences flow well for comprehension and have appropriate transition words and phrases.

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
My two cents as an English teacher would be you basically had it right. The editor's version is choppy. I would have only made a minor change to keep it in the past tense. " When I entered the department the associate immediately smiled, made eye contact, and warmly asked how I was doing today.

The same thing happen to me, I was doing a hardware shop and the editors at Maritz returned my shop for further clarification, and the whole narrative was changed, when I told them I cannot update a report that has been changed I was told that they do not change reports, and that they do not do that, then I was sick for 1 week and could not update the shop they threaten not to pay me and I had it out with a manager. I am very frustrated with this company,

I had an issue a number of years ago with a narrative being chopped up and an inaccurate pronoun being added. Since then, I have been keeping pdf copies of the reports I submit. It is very useful to have them to refer to when questions come up. It is even more important to have them on those rare occasions when I need to prove to an MSC what I originally submitted to them.
The one I have just gotten from the same company on there gas station shops is Too many pictures in the report not needed.
I really couldn't care less what they do with my report as long as they pay me. My concern is about why they're not telling their shoppers when they need to correct what they would consider an error.
