I think it's Portland, Oregon where there's a law that you can't put your own gas in your own car; you must allow the station attendant to put gas in your car for you. Maybe there are other places where that is the law as well. However, where I live I can put my own gas in my car so I don't feel weird asking because I don't have to ask. I have 10-5 gallon gas cans because I can hit the road pretty hard between MF, Maritz and a few others. I've sometimes put gas in other people's cars at the shops I've done. You know, the ones hanging around asking for gas money!
I always would just get the 2 gallons and never felt strange since I would pay for the gas at the pump. These shops are great until gas starts going up again. Once it gets over $4.00 a gallon they become money losers to me since I usually get cheaper gas.
2 gallons is the minimum. I always fill up, I need the gas anyways.

Yes I am from Oregon so we have to have attendants put the gas in for us. I scheduled on the same road so I figured I would get the minimum but it just feels weird. Now putting 2 gallons of gas in a gas can on the other hand does not feel weird to me.
I'm with Spicy, but I only have 4-5 gal containers so far. I drive in on empty that day and do a route until both my car and all the cans are full. I thought I was nuts doing that, glad to know I'm not alone. The caveat for me is I have a lidless gas tank. I had to purchase a special tool in order to put the gas into the car (and a funnel).
Shopping up and down the Colorado Rocky Mountain front range.
So, you can just ask at every station to put 2 gallons eta in the gas can (for your lawn mower, generator) and then put all 5 gallons in your tank yourself! Eventually you won't care, probably, about the weird feeling! However, a 5 gallon gas can costs $12 at Wally World so you have to get some at a bonus.

You can always say that your real purpose in stopping is that you need to use the restroom and want to honor the "restrooms for customers only" policy.

You don't even have to explain yourself, as over the years I've NEVER been asked why... Just like there's no question about asking for a receipt for my $0.15 piece of candy I paid for with my pocket change.

I have no idea why it bothers me to only put a partial tank of gas in a car. I guess it brings me back to my poor teenage years lol. We have tons of gas cans because we ride atv's and have lots of toys that require gas.

Hey, that's a great idea about the lidless gas can. The one's I bought have the safety valve and it drives me absolutely bananas trying to hold, push, pull, tip, tilt and release. I want to bust out the inner part of the spout but haven't figured out how to yet.
I've had one cashier ask me about my odd purchase... The bathroom line worked great. It's a pretty normal thing for gas stations to get small purchases from customers who really just need a pit stop - especially if the location is right off the freeway.

Remove the spout and use a funnel. You will need help if it is a 5-gallon can.

My gas can collection: 5 5-gallon, 2 2-gallon, 2 1.5-gallon and 1 1-gallon.
I always say I need the receipt for my receipt hog phone app so I can get my points. That is if they ask (and most won't care why).
Shopping across Indiana but mostly around Indianapolis.
I have to stretch it to make 5 minutes on site for these. In NJ we have gas attendants so I don't even get out of my car. The stations I do don't have stores...Ezy Pzy, nice way to get some gas reimbursed.

I don't feel weird because my car takes premium gas and unless I do these shops occasionally, I only visit one gas station. I think there are people that actually only get two gallons of gas.
I am waiting for the next exciting opportunity!

So, you are carrying potentially 50 gal of gasoline in your vehicle?! Where do you keep it, in your trunk? IMHO this raises many flags but I will keep my comments brief. First of all my friend you are a time bomb! I'm sure it is against the law to carry multiple containers of gasoline in most, if not all, jurisdictions throughout the country for personal use. Transporting diesel fuel is a different animal but still strictly regulated for commercial use by the DOT and Hazmat. God forbid if you were ever involved in an accident. Not only would you end up a burnt little french fry but all your family members would be investigated by the FBI for terrorist activities! Do you smell it? What does that tell you? Carrying much more than a 2 gal for an emergency might be hard to explain to your local cop. Now, I believe I've seen this issue addressed in MSC guidelines (maybe in the safety instructions). Perhaps someone from an MSC could elaborate. FWIW, just buy a buck's worth of gas, make life easier for all of us!
I lived in Hawaii, offgrid. We had 4-50 gallon drums for fuel for our banana farm. Against the law, pfffff.

I have to share a funny with the group. I did my first MF shop at a particular station two weeks ago. It's near my house and I did another one yesterday.
The cashier started putting her uniform top on while I got my bottle of water. Since she finally got her name tag on when I had to ask her to unlock the restroom (that happened last time too), I gave it to her on the report.
Last time she didn't have her uniform top on.
And I always top my tank off before a trip.

That reminds me. True story. A few years ago I witnessed an individual fueling up at a pump (Flying J) in Gary, IN with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth! Farmers do fly under the radar in certain instances but not in passenger vehicles on interstate highways in the continental U.S. Maybe she was from a banana farm, who knows. KAAABOOOM!

500 gal or less and you don't need a hazmat lic. but it's also not hard to get one; on interstate highways, in the continental u.s. unless you know otherwise, please, do tell
I once explained that I had borrowed a friend's car and needed proof that I put some gas in the car.
