If a mystery shopping company is offering more than say... $25 up front, it's usually a scam. I did have a company send me a prepaid card of $200 once to buy and dispose of merchandise privately/secretly, but that's more of an exception than a rule.

It is an exception and actually qualifies as product retrieval. Another category of work frequently farmed out to ICs.

Don't even think of depositing it in your bank. SCAM!
OP, If you still aren't sure it is a scam and you want a safe way to find out... Hand carry the check to the bank that it is drawn on and tell them you would like them to certify it, exchange it for a cashier's check, or cash it. Watch them say no.
This post is a scam. That anyone besides a 4 year old says "I haven't did any work" with no comma between "is the usual" is apparent. Do members of this forum just throw out one of these every now and then to have the subject brought up?

I think you need to get out more, lol. That is how many people write, especially informally online. Check out almost any Facebook group, even one comprised of mystery shoppers.

The only way anyone would know for sure that this post was fake was if they did it themselves, LOL. Spicy, did you just throw out this post to have the subject brought up? No, I didn't really think so. Seems like an awful lot of bother for someone to create a new screen name just to bring up the subject. If I or most other forum members wanted to broach the subject, we would start a thread with the subject line of something like "About scams and receiving large checks in the mail" and then start out the post with something like, "I know this has been discussed many times before, but..."
Meanwhile, we should assume that the OP was looking for validation that the check is fake and offer whatever advice that we can to keep them safe from falling victim to the scam.
