Can Editors Be More Vague?

I responded to the below message from the editor with this e-mail, am I wrong?

You're need to be more specific. If I check yes, than no and N/A are unchecked and visa versa. I couldn't submit my report if I didn't answer all the questions.

Or is she asking me to comment on why I didn't pick the two answers that didn't apply?

Hi, We still need some updates before we can submit your report to the client. Please comment on all unchecked boxes and submit your report within 12 hours. Thank you.

I fixed the problems with the four items below because I knew what they wanted.

09/08/2018

Hi, Thank you for conducting this shop.

1) Please comment on each and every NO response and all unchecked boxes.
2) Please recheck the unchecked boxes for Q4(restroom) as it is contradicting with its respective narrative of "Store Conditions" section.
3) Q-45a should be marked as N/A if the bottom of your receipt does not show you any "accumulated" points under the word "balance" for a program i.e. the gas program. Please clarify.
4) Please clarify your response to Q22c of the Bakery department. The picture uploaded for the Bakery department shows low stock items, not fully out of stock. The "NO" response given for Q22c is contradicting with the picture you have uploaded. Please upload a picture that shows areas that were fully out of stock. The instruction is "NO response means there is NO inventory present."

Please make the above changes and then resubmit your report within 12 hours.

Best Regards,
Quality Assurance Team

I'm having more trouble understanding your response to her than her "vague" response to you.
I feel like I have to ask- is English not your primary language?

Have forum, will drink...been there done that. Reading drunk is hard enough. Posting drunk can be hilarious (for both you and the readers) or terribly offensive. Yours wasn't that bad (JAS raises hand sheepishly).
The editor's initial email included:
2) Please recheck the unchecked boxes for Q4(restroom) as it is contradicting with its respective narrative of "Store Conditions" section.

It sounds like certain questions have multiple boxes for evaluative criteria, not just Yes/No/NA options.
For example, the restroom question may have boxes to click asking if the following were present - Toilet Paper - Towels or Hand dryer - Soap - Hot and Cold Water - Free of Offensive Odors - Free of Cleaning Supplies - Clean and Operational Toilet - Clean and Operational Sink - Clean and Dry Floor - Free of Graffiti

In this case, if any boxes are left unchecked, then the report will go through, but you will need to provide an explanation as to why the boxes were left unchecked.

According to the editor, when you initially submitted the report the restroom question had unchecked criteria that contradicted your comments, but it still went through. Perhaps you forgot to check the box to indicate that soap was present, but you stated that the restroom was clean, fully stocked and fully functional. You need to correct your comment to state that there was no soap, or check the box to indicate that soap was present.
1) Please comment on each and every NO response and all unchecked boxes.

I revised the narrative to explain all NO responses.

2) Please recheck the unchecked boxes for Q4(restroom) as it is contradicting with its respective narrative of "Store Conditions" section.
In reponse to Q4 Restroom, I initially marked as not clean because the was a sewer smell in the bathroom. I changed it to fully stocked and clean and put the sewer smell in the narrative

I changed the no to a yes and it is explained in my narrative.

3) Q-45a should be marked as N/A if the bottom of your receipt does not show you any "accumulated" points under the word "balance" for a program i.e. the gas program. Please clarify.

I put a N/A since there weren't any accumulated points on the receipt.

I changed the answer from NO to YES.

And she still tells me these questions haven't been fixed.
Well I finally found out what they wanted and all of the questionable numbered questions. I finally got the question numbers they claimed were not compete. All of them had already been answered back on the 8th.
These are my responses:

Question: Did the cashier welcome you and Did the cashier point out the survey on the bottom of the receipt? my answers:

The narrative was in Q50a.

43 This was already in the narrative: When I got to the register Alan welcomed me

46 This was also in the narrative: Alan didn't mention the Tops survey at the bottom of your register receipt.

The question was, Would you shop at this store again and why.

52 This was in the narrative: The associates were friendly and helpful. The store was clean and stocked everything I would need. The advertised sale items I checked were in stock. They were improving the look on the outside of the store by painting the brick and some other upgrades that I could smell but not see. The parking lot was in good repair with no potholes. An associate was constantly bringing shopping carts from the parking lot. It appeared that the store managers took pride in the way the store looked.

What more do you want?
What MSC is this?

I have put in the narrative before that I was greeted and was told that they wanted to know how I was greeted - what did the employee say.

They may have wanted to know if he said "welcome to xyz", "hello", "hi". One of the fast food places the employee has to say "hello" in order to get credit for greeting the customer.

I agree it's very frustrating when editors ask you questions you've already answered. But in the instance above, they may not have wanted you to just repeat back to them what they asked. I think they were looking for more detail. Almost every shop I do for customer service/retail asks "how" you were greeted and in many cases, they want to know verbatim what the cashier or CSR said. Saying the cashier welcomed you may not be telling them what they need to know. They could, of course, have clarified what they wanted by asking, "How did the cashier welcome you? What did he/she say?" Answering what they asked with the same wording and no other explanation may not be very helpful to them.

I'm not doing them in Buffalo. Only Rochester, and they are closing five stores here.

sad smiley I'm sad to hear this. They were my grocery store of choice when I lived up in that area. I did not like Wegmans (too big, too expensive, and further away from my home).

yes I heard they were closing stores. They took on too much debt in acquisitions and have to unload some of it. I hope the one on Jefferson in Rochester doesn't close. I do get up to shop Rochester area monthly. Sorry Wrosie but there seems to be a ton of shops in Rochester area. Wegmans is plenty throughout Rochester and Buffalo thou rarely shopped. I don't mind Wegmans but have always preferred the Mafia owned Tops. Yes Wegmans is big but so are most Tops.

We lived in a small town in Livingston County, just south of Rochester, and they opened a Tops there. It wasn't large like the ones in Rochester, but "right-sized" for the area it served. The one several miles away in Geneseo was huge, one of the "big-box" Wegmans. How I hated that store. Our local Tops was a really nice one.

I don't know NorthFork's standards, but it sounds as if even if it's explained in the narrative, they still want an explanation in the comment box for "No" responses.

What gets me is when there is a yes/no question and then they want you to give five sentences on top of the checked box without repeating what the question asked. While I understand certain questions you can have a response in writing, most of them there is nothing to say. Example did the agent use your name more than once when they learned it? If the answer is no then the answer is no. What the heck do you write?

Well I just did another of these shops and it was accepted on the first submission. I've done probably 40 of these shops over the last 3-4 years and never had the problem that I did with the one I originally posted about.

I did put down EXACT:LY what they asked in the questions this time if I answered no.
"Did the cashier ask you to take the survey on the bottom of the receipt?"

I marked it no and put in the narrative, "The cashier did not aske me to take the survey on the bottom of the receipt".
As with all companies you should explain every no in the narrative. This is to verify that you did not mis check the box. That simple sentence is fine but of course you did spell ask wrong it is ask not aske.

Shopping Western NY, Northeast and Central PA, and parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Have car will travel anywhere if the monies right.
Now here's what I like. Another shop from Ipsos, which just acquired GFK per the e-mail I just received.

"Shopper Comments section is to be used if there is anything you need to let us know
regarding the shop. Please do not use this section to reiterate items that have already
been asked in the questionnaire itself. You can use this area to clarify some of the
questions asked or to provide information about the shop that cannot be provided
elsewhere."

I take this to mean if you mark no, you don't have to reiterate that they didn't do what the question asked in the narrative.
I think they want to know how he welcomed you. Did he smile, make eye contact, say Hello, ask if you found everything you were looking for etc. Alan welcomed me is no specific enough, it doesn't tell them anything they can use to reward or coach him on, if they do that. I know some apartment lease shops if they do everything they are expected to they get a bonus. (A friend that worked doing that when he was studying for his real estate license told me he hated to get shopped but he did get $100 if he did everything right. The same with Nordstrum's. I don't do that shop, I am too old but my niece told me she got $100 bonus when she got a perfect score.
If I'm thinking of the same box you're thinking of, no. That comment box is to let them know about something not asked or addressed in the shop. For example, I did a shop once where the location's clock was around 10 minutes slow, so a) it looked as if I didn't leave enough time between two shops of the same type and b) my times and the receipt times didn't match. That box at the end is where you would put that type of information. I had something else happen once on a shop that I knew they'd question, so I addressed it ahead of time in that comment box (sadly, they didn't read it and asked me the exact question I was trying to avoid having them have to ask!).

To paraphrase a popular quote: "I don't think that statement means what you think it means." smiling smiley
