My first Five guys was rejected because they say I didn't order a drink...I ordered a milkshake, is that not a drink, they give you 5.00 extra and say you can, goodness how much can one drink?

Amex and Bof A "deals" with cashback are tailored to the customer. I don't know about other brands but it is always a good policy to check your "deals" periodically. I just checked mine yesterday and Five Guys was not among them but that is probably because I never use my AmEx card for restaurants.
Hmmnn.... maybe they are trying to attract new customers. I've never been to a Five Guys.

It could be. After my husband died last year I lost every single one of my B of A deals and had to start from scratch even though it was a joint card. They told me it is based on your spending patterns. I had to slowly build up to getting 25 or more deals each period.
Most of the time I never even heard of half the deals I get on Am Ex. but I did use a $20 off $100 once when shopping at a high end restaurant! The rebate is not reflected on what you get billed for your meal. You get it afterwards as a credit on your credit card.
I get money back from certain restaurants through Groupon... (sometimes only 5%) goes into my debit account automatically.

Live consciously....
Irene, that's why they give the extra $5 for the milkshake shops. They don't consider it a drink. You are supposed to evaluate the self-serve soda machine and that's why they want you to order both a drink and then the milkshake. That stinks to have it rejected. At least it wasn't a ton of money out of pocket. How did you like the burger?
The shops reimburse either $12.50 for a standard shop (burger (or other main item), fries, and fountain drink, or $17 for a burger, fries, fountain drink and milkshake. Most shoppers don't want to go over the reimbursement amount so many of us won't spend $20 there. Good to know though!

Jas.....I won't do them anymore, all my other burger shops are so much easier. I enjoyed it in the moment, the shake was good, the burger an 8 out of 10.....I'd never get both a drink and a shake, but I guess it was my error, still stinks. I've had stuff happen with Mercantile, and they always fought for me, never rejected anything.

Live consciously....
I usually order my burger, fries, drink, and shake and pay for it all at once, but tell the order taker I am going to wait for my shake until I finish everything else. They wait to make it until I walk back up after I am done eating and ask for it. Then I take it to go as my dessert. Sometimes I just take a couple of sips and stick it in the freezer when I get home, then enjoy it later or the next day after a short thaw. It works for me.

If you have better burgers on other shops I don't blame you.
Jas that is good advice. Sometimes on Shake Shack jobs I need to order a shake and a drink or a frozen dessert and a drink. Unless I have the frozen item while I eat it would melt. Once I brought a cold pack along and brought my dessert home but asking for them to give it to me later would be better... except I just remembered I have to take a pic of the whole order untouched so I guess I cannot do that. Oh well, good thought.
Irene I did 5 guys a few times but found it not worth it for me. The locations had no parking so I had to walk far to park for free. Another time it turned out to be a shop for the delivery service which I did not realize and I had to use my first FREE delivery order to do the shop. Now I am no longer a new customer of the delivery service. My food was all cold when it arrived and it was wrong to boot...My nearby locations had no shakes so I never encountered that issue.
They should make it abundantly clear that a shake is not a drink in their mind. I can understand the misunderstanding. But then I have not looked at the instructions in a while.

Think of it like those McDonalds shops where you had to buy a dine in and a drive thru meal.

The client wants the burger, fries and fountain drink ordered because they ask if all three are on the receipt. Plus they want us to use the drink station to ensure there are no issues with it.

I've done a lot of Five Guys and I have yet to get one with the milkshake. I want a milkshake!

Shopping Arkansas, Louisiana, & Mississippi.
Good deal. Even slicker when you just bring your own cheese to stay close to the reimbursement limit.

Very infrequently shopping the Greater Denver Area, Colorado Springs and in-between in Colorado these days.

This must be a joke.
BB&T offers 5% back on their debit card at Five Guys.

Just get a bonus to cover the excess.

When they say "drink" they are referring to a fountain drink- which you always, always always have to order for any FG shop.

The milkshake can be added to some shops depending on what your CPI states. Most shops do not have a milkshake requirement but you must read your paperwork to find out. Yes you were supposed to order a fountain drink AND a milkshake.
I'm sure Tarantado is joking.

Most of the shops in my area DO have the milkshake requirement, but only over the last year have these locations added milkshakes to their menu.

ArkLa, I am sure that one day your locations will get milkshakes...
I have never seen one with a milkshake requirement. It always says something like, "if milkshake, $5."

How do you know if it's a milkshake shop?
It will say on your CPI and there will be an additional reimbursement added to the usual amount.

Or do both?

Fresh Asiago or Gouda from my local farmer’s market goes well with my Five Guys hamburger instead overpaying for their cheap American cheese.

Yep! YMMV. AMEX has had a variety of deals over the years where I pocketed extra $$$ due to credits back: $10 off $50 for Seasons 52, $30 off $300 Marriott properties, $10 off $40 for CPK, 10% cash back for all FedEx and Lowe’s charges, etc. are the most recent deals I stacked with my shops. All of course, are non-taxable profits and good to factor in when looking for shops.

I agree with tarantado on this as the concept hits home although I have never brought cheese. I started on these little avoidance s of restaurant charges when my kids were babies and I would bring their sippy cups along to restaurants to control what they drank when the restaurant did not offer something I thought healthy for a baby. Then when no one questioned me I continued to bring it along until they were too old and put milk in it instead of ordering a glass for $2-4. Also would get the xtra large fries at fast food to share rather than costlier indiv portions. And now I bring my own washable plastic ware for leftovers when I eat out to save the environment one throwaway container at a time. Label me cheap or thrifty but my financial situation is much better due to some of these small savings over time.

Agreed. Thanks to my similar beliefs and practices to what many consider 'cheap,' 'greedy,' 'stingy,' etc., I was able to purchase a second home in an expensive housing market here in Colorado late last month for my parents at 28 years old!

I love the idea of bringing your own containers to help save the environment. I too am environmentally conscientious but this never occurred to me, thanks!

We all make newbie errors. Next time you do a Five Guys, pay close attention to the drink requirement. It cannot be bottled water for example. It must be iced tea or soda. The assignment will state specifically if a milkshake is required. In either case, you still have to get the soda/iced tea. Yeh, it is a lot of beverage but you can also pass over any of the milkshake shops. Next time, you will sail through the requirements.

Shopping SoCal and Maui.
If Irene gave it an 8, bet she will pass on going back. She has burgers in her area that get a 10 smiling smiley Besides, their fries suck. I only do this client if they raise the fee to $24.
